Get these cheap Radions Gen2 or...wait????

As most of you guys know, it was leaked yesterday that the Radion Gen2's were going on sale all over the supplier's websites......

I'm very heavily debating whether I should jump on these or not...

I have the Apex Lite, and really want to control my lights with it. I know that Radions aren't Apex-Ready.... so is it worth my time/money to buy these lights?

I'm sure after MACNA there will be a bunch of new stuff out and maybe other further discounted LED brands....

HELP??? THOUGHTS?

With reef link, they are apex controllable. That was announced at MACNA and ecotech is signing up beta testers.

Just to confirm-

With the Reeflink there is no need for an Apex to control Radions and in the near future VorTechs wirelessly. In addition, based on Neptunes announcements during MACNA the Radions are now also able to be controlled wirelessly from the WXM wireless module.

So do not buy one get the G3 when it comes out.

Why would you want old technology?

I would wait. +1 on old technology LED's are continually getting better and better. Who knows, the next gen will be wicked better.

How much better do you want the LEDs to be, as they seem to be more than bright enough for corals.

Why would you want old technology?

Old tech isn't necessarily bad, just typically not as good. There are surely some people out there who can't quite justify the expense, but the discount allows them to enter the market and upgrade from say an old T-5 retro kit.

Old technology.... LOL, its funny how this hobby is becoming another branch of the tech industry trends, which is fine if that is why you are in the hobby.

Since I like to grow corals and keep fish, I would buy a fixture that grows corals and has value to me. Do some research, many people are growing all kinds of corals with the Gen2, so if it suits your needs and the price is good for you, just get them. If you are a person that have that itch if you don't have the latest of the latest, then wait....but you might have to wait again because something else is coming out.... :rollface:

I agree with this. Pick out something in your budget and that is proven to grow coral. If you try to keep with LED's you will be replacing fixtures very few months it seems.

Can you expand on this? Does this announcement mean that I can control all aspects of the Radions through the Apex interface / programming? So you have the option to program the LEDs with either the built in interface or with my Apex?

I mean if you can afford 550 for a single light on an Aquarium then you can afford 650.

It is not like it's twice the price or anything like that.

It is so close in price that it is trivial really you might as well get the latest and greatest.

I agree with this for the most part if it pertained to just a single light and that's it. Those are kind of my thoughts as well. When you're talking about multiple lights though, then you're talking about saving hundreds of dollars. Even though I purchased mine at full retail price it wouldn't have hurt my feelings or my bank account as much if I would have saved a few hundred dollars. In fact I probably would have taken that $200 and put it towards another MP10 as it would be almost paid for. It's a win-win for me and Ecotech.

I agree about a single fixture. It wouldn't be enough to make or break my decision.

I get what you are saying, but my point was also if you are going to be waiting for LEDs that have not even been announced but from the current trends you know they are coming you are gonna be waiting forever because you "know" something "better" will come out soon.

You need a light that suits your needs (grow corals) and if you research properly the light you get should work, if it doesn't, something else might be wrong.

As I said before, I understand that there are equipment enthusiast who get joy and keep engaged in the hobby by trying all different kind of equipment and getting the latest, in which case I would wait because it seems the gen2s are at the end of their cycle.

Yes new ones will keep coming out.

But if you buy a Light the day it is released you know that you have the latest and greatest from that company for a year without feeling cheated.

That is why I always buy right when it comes out or right when the price drops.

I was at Macna so I can answer a few of these thoughts. Radions are Apex ready. Neptune is making a push to have their tech compatible with most of the popular lights. I sat through a 2 hour Apex talk so I can confirm that.

You do know there is always the next product coming out right? The minute a tech comes out there is something better in development. 4k Tv's are already obsolete since 8k Tv's are in development and prototypes.

Yes, corals can only take so much light. I have seen 100's of graphs from reefers who don't heed the warning and blast their corals with tons of light. Spectrum and a variety of colors are where the advancements seem to be heading towards.
