Getting ACJR online

I have read a lot of threads about hoooking the ACJR up to the computer and being able to "see" it on the web. I havent found the answer to my situation and wondered if anyone could help me out. Thanks.

I have an ethernet line running from my router (not wireless) to my tank. Can I hook the ACJR up to my computer somehow using the ethernet cable?

Do I have to run a spereate serial cable to my computer, or could I use an serial to ethernet adpater? If I could use an adapter, would I be able to access the ACJR from the web or just be able to access it locally?

I have read a lot about the mod to the linksys router to get this to work, however I dont have a wireless setup nor am I going to install one. I just want to know if I can do the same thing this mod does, but with a non-wireless router.

Yes, you can but you would have to get a Serial->Ethernet adapter.

If you do that, you would be able to easily connect your controller to aquanotes running on your computer and then you would be able to connect to aquanotes remotely.

You can get the adapter from here:

Expensive though ($99). Just make sure you get the right one (male or female... cannot remember which one is the right one).

If your computer is close enough to your tank, you could use Bluetooth. You can read more in the post from one of our local reefers working on the project for an RK2, but no reason it won't work with the AC that I know of:

One more question. Would I still need the Ground Isolated Serial Connector if I go from the serial to Ethernet connection?

I probably hold of on that. If you start having problems because you dont have it, then buy it. I dont see the need to buy something you may not need (I did not have it and never had any problems when I was using it on a ACII)

Not sure if that will work. I see that it needs its own power supply. I have never used one of those so I cannot really tell you if it will/will not work.

As I tell most people, by the time you are done connecting the ACJr to your network, you have spent the same amount of money as if you had purchased the ACIII... amazing!

This is true but then again some of us bought the AC Jr and LATER realized we want to hook it up to the web so in this case we gotta bit the bullet to connect the Jr up instead of replacing EVERYTHING again.

Here is a free solution...
Use 2 of the pair that your ethernet is not using and create a serial cable. You can go to Neptunesys.com for the pinout.

I installed this converter and got it to work. Its a little cheaper then the other one for $99. Now the I can control the JR through my router via ethernet.

With this route, it should be really easy to control the JR online using Aquanotes.

Yes. I can control the AC JR from my computer. I have a non wireless router that has ethernet ran to the converter, then the serial cable from that to the JR.

From my understanding, I think its easier to get the AC JR online if your connected through a router. Otherwise, I would just run a long serial cable to my computer.

So has anyone been able to log into Aquanotes from the web with the ACJR?

I cant seem to get log into aquanotes using the web server or from a remote PC. I setup aquanotes just like the instructions state for the web server. I have IIS installed. I have the ACJR hooked up through my router with the serial to ethernet adapter. I can access the ACJR with the "Direct to PC" site in aquanotes.

The port for the adapater is 50000. Do I use that same port in the config-options-tcp/ip menu and in the database-site database-connection menu?

The adapter has a username and password that it needs to log into if I were to access it remotley (which works). Do I use that username and password in all the areas aquanotes ask for a username and password?
