Hopefully someone that uses GFO in a media bag can answer this question. IMO, it will be very difficult to determine how effective GFO is in a media bag, and when it is exhausted. The benefit of using a reactor (Kent Marine, TLF, or a more expensive flavor) is that you can test the output water. As soon as you measure PO4, you know the GFO is done and time to change it. Someone please correct me if my understanding is wrong. IMO, its well worth the cost of a $35 reactor to know your GFO is doing its job efficiently and because you can measure its effectiveness.
