GFO (think PhosBan) Bulk Order!!!

Wait, which version is this, the pelleted or something finer? I only ask because I'm probably going to be putting it in a Media bag

I'm going to start a new thread to address this, so this thread can focus on orders, but this is the same question I'm trying to answer right now.

Please go to this thread to add your input on which form of GFO we should order (particle vs pelletized). Thanks.

the particle works in a media bag as well, you'll need a fine mesh of course. But a reactor isnt absolutely necessary. I dont have one, and just place some fiber in my baffles and put the media on top so the fiber can catch the small particulates that may come from the media :)

anybody know how much you would need to fill half a phosban reactor (two little fishes)?

how much should be used per application use in a media bag.
Hopefully someone that uses GFO in a media bag can answer this question. IMO, it will be very difficult to determine how effective GFO is in a media bag, and when it is exhausted. The benefit of using a reactor (Kent Marine, TLF, or a more expensive flavor) is that you can test the output water. As soon as you measure PO4, you know the GFO is done and time to change it. Someone please correct me if my understanding is wrong. IMO, its well worth the cost of a $35 reactor to know your GFO is doing its job efficiently and because you can measure its effectiveness. However, Phosban states 1g/gallon of water. HTH.

The details on DrsFosterSmith state it will hold between 150 to 200 grams.

Revised list (please let me know if I missed someone or an amount is wrong):
bored4long: 1500g
funman1: 600g
kdblove_99: 2041g
pv1191: 600g
Reefugee: 600g
dieselgrk: 750g
H20Sidhe: 750g
CaliforniaDreamer: 600g
jimdogg187: 600g
KMP: 450g

CaliforniaDreamer: I have no problem passing these out and collecting $ at the next meeting.

My math puts us at 8500 grams. We are just shy of the 5 gallon order.

Someone check my math to make sure its right (yeah I know the pound to gram conversion isn't exact):
20 pounds of GFO for $250 + $25 shipping = $275

20 pounds * 450 grams/pound = 9000 grams
9000 grams / (150 grams/unit) = 60 150g units
$275 / 60 units = $4.58 per 150 grams

As long as shipping is accurate and you guys don't mind me rounding up to $5 for the sake of simplicity and covering hassle of splitting and bagging...$5 looks great. Sure as hell beats $17 for the same amount of Phosban.

This is the regular discount 2Part offers on their website for large quantity orders.

If its not too late, put me in for the amount needed to hit the 20 pound mark. (500 grams.)

Actually, I would like 1200 grams, but for the sake of simplicity, I could get by with 500 grams.

Aaron, I have a feeling that there will be others that want some, and may even be some that drop out. I'll work with 2Part and see if they can throw in an extra pound or two at the reduced rate to make sure there is enough for all. Besides, any extra can end up in the raffle.

Hey all,

Earlier this year I was on a mission to find this stuff in bulk and not pay the rather expensive retail costs for a bucket of rust. After much research, I did find the manufacturer that has one of the sole licenses to supply the US this particular reagent. Ferric oxide is also heavily used in arsenic removal in water treatment plants - where it finds most of its use.

Anyhow, not to bore you with the details, I did get an account established with the company that distributes this stuff but never went ahead with the order as I did not feel there was enough interest to justify the qty I would have to buy it at. I have access to ordering the granular or pelleted version (exact same stuff as what you are looking at). My pricing would be less than what you have listed here simply because I would not make money off it, just providing a service to fellow reefers.

Anyhow, they prefer it if I ordered in 500kg orders - which is 1100 lbs of rust. Ha! :D But I can order it as small as 4 cu. ft and still make sense on the shipping (approx 120 lbs for the granular, or 140lbs for the pellets). My price would be as follows:

4 cu ft: $12/lb or $4/per 150g units (inclusive of shipping taxes, bags, etc.)

I can order this and have a bunch left over to supply the club (and myself) as needed, but I do ask that somebody take on the responsibility for splitting, etc. as I am not able to handle the logistics.

Now the real price savings come in at the 1100 lbs order mark, but wow that's a lot of rust!

OT: I can also supply ya'll with bulk:

Calcium Hydroxide (Mississippi Lime)
Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salts)
Na2CO3 (Soda Ash)
Calcium Chloride (Dow flake)
Magnesium Chloride (Mag flake)

...of which I have a couple hundred lbs already 'in stock' and can pass it on locally for incredible pricing since I order it direct from the manufacturer - just do not have the means to handle the logistics of bagging, distribution, etc.

Mike, that is a kind offer, but it would be a WHOLE lot of leftover rust (100 lbs or so)! Actually, the same bulk order through 2Part would end up being about the same cost. I'm not sure it is truly worth making a 120lb order. But I guess that is more up to you. If you want to make the order, I'll split it up into the required quantities for those interested in some.

I will/do use the stuff personally and was thinking on placing an order anyhow - as I see value in having bulk supply qtys available on hand for my operation. I just figured if ya'll wanted some, it would be no big deal to pass on the savings I receive. It is purely up to you though if you want to go this route or not, just thought I provide some alternatives.

Oh you can imagine what you will see at the raffles for the next eon or 2... ha!

It also comes in a nifty drum that can be used to store it long term. Yay! just what I ALWAYS wanted for Xmas - a drum of rust!! :D

So the real question is pellets or granules? It has to be one way or the other (do not want 2 drums - 1 is plenty)

I was going to leave that choice up to a vote of all members joining in this buy. I can go either way, as I see benefits to both of them. There may be a little less efficiency with the use of the pelletized form in a reactor, but at the silly low cost we are getting this, I don't think its a concern.
