GHL Mitras Club

All my LPS doing great as well, but not SPS . Some people saying that LEd doing good in high nutrients tanks.. i dunno...

I'm a firm believer that to get the most out of your sps and LEDs, you must feed the corals like mad.
High nutrient input is extremely important, I think. More so than when using t5 or mh and I have absolutely no proof of this, it is only my personal feeling and growing experience.
It seems that acros in particular need to have really good nutrition not get get light stressed by LEDs (whites in particular..)
Aminos and lots of food. Of course, to do this you must be exporting nutrients from the system very efficiently, as well..

I have always done amino acids and tons of food and have had great success under t5s 3 inches from the water. Can't wait to try this on the LEDs I think it will be a success

Hey Matt,
I agree with you, feeding is really important. I have about 30 fishes in my tank, feed them 2-3 times a day plus i feed my corals with dif type of foods.. and yet i cant color up some of my acros:(

Well, Mike, I have to say that that is my experience as well.
I'm in the exact same boat..
I see an acro at the shop and when I get it home under my lights, it doesn't look the same. Sometimes they end up looking nicer and sometimes worse, though..
I guess one could say that about any coral since they often change once they get into a new system.
I've made so many huge changes to my system since setting it up a year ago that I've never had decent stability for longer than a few months so I can't really say yet what my corals will look like once they really start growing...
Corals seem to need a lot of time and stability to really get happy under LEDs..

That sounds like a good formula but I'd be carefull putting Mitras 3 inches from the water... That will produce some very intense lighting (par) and extreme shadowing, imo..

Anim8me2, your program is clearly something that you put a lot of thought into. It is very complex..
Could you give your thought process or rationale for creating the program the way you did?
I'm curius about the dramatic swings in intensities for specific leds in certain time periods as well as why they go from 0 to 100% within a given time frame..
Thanks!

I find if you put the corals on the sandbed for a month to get used to the lamps there are no problems

I am trying to match specific color wavelengths from lamps that have proven successful . the iwasaki in the morning, t5 bulbs and mh later.

Fellas,
Mitras been around quite some time already . Please , post some pics with Sps tanks that been using Mitras over a year.
Would love to see some great results :))

+1

Even though I went with T5/LED, I subscribed to this thread because originally I wanted to get a Mitras.

Mine will have been running for a year under the Mitras pretty soon, next month will be 12 months.

This is when I started them in the early stages.

This is today, some corals have changed but the right hand side is mostly original stuff. You can see the blue Digi has exploded and is a few mm from the surface. The Guttatus has exploded as well, I moved a piece next to the orange monti plate which is now a small colony. The Heliofungia can be seen at the front in the first pic, it's at the back in these pics. Same coral, it's turned into a monster.

Wow Aaron, your SPS have grown very well. And as always, great photography. There is no doubt that LED's can grow corals. Can you take some top down/coral shots of the SPS? - I am specifically interested in the colouration of Acropora under under the Mitras. Most other SPS seem to do fine under LED's.

Thanks.

I lost all but 1 Acro in the tank crash I had then followed by the power cut in January which finished them off. I have a blue tip one which survived and is doing ok, i added a Subulata frag from AAC last week so I'll see how that goes. I said to myself I wouldn't add anymore tricky SPS after all my problems as I nearly drained the tank down and packed it in completely.

Thats a shame about the power cut. :(

That Subulata is a nice and hardy coral. I nearly bought one from Paul, but left it because I have similar coloured corals. But my mate has one and its doing nicely in his tank.
