ghstrider's custom 150 build thread

Its not rimless... its going to be Eurobraced and the waterline should be about 1.5" under the eurobracing. The wavebox is only supposed to produce a 1" max wave and its adjustable. Only reason I wanted a wavebox was to keep detritus from settling and I think it will work in this setup.

Eddie I'm not a big fan of boxes for many reasons- must importanly the continued stress the wave puts on your seems. Even the best built tank will suffer in the long run, just my opinion.

Anyways looks like everything is going beautifully - congrats!!

Heres a pic ReefSavvy just sent me of the tank in progress..

Im freakin psyched!!!!

Oh and eurobracing isnt completed so dont freak out!!!

Update...

Update...

Tank is here!!!! It looks amazing and now on to the stand build. My neighbor is amazing with woodwork and has agreed to build the stand/canopy so i'll post pics along the way!

Also, Ive sold the Ca Reactor to save space and going with a Bubble Magus Doser 3 part. The BM Doser has been ordered and should arrive next week.

As for livestock, my original crew posted above remains the same and I found a small Moorish feeding on frozen at the store so I grabbed him and put him in my buddy's large frag tank where hes nipping on all the LR right outta the bag. It will serve as his QT to get him eating and fat before my tank is operational later this year.

Now for some pics... (sorry about the shipping paper still taped on the glass but Im not removing it until its up and running to prevent scratches...)

Heres a shot of the back (covered in black vinyl)

Thanks for looking!!!! And I promise some good build pics to come!

a 1" piece of the vinyl backing tore off the bottom (as you can see) but i'll patch that up with some extra vinyl eventually.

wow.....awesome.....it even looks nice with the paper! that overflow box is sweet.

cant wait to see this thing up and running.

I have to agree that 2 part is definately easier and safer to control than a Ca reactor. Although Ive never tried the latter, 2 part with a doser/controller is easy to manage with little worry of failure. I can even say the same if you manual dose. Ive been doing it for years. You check Alk frequently and all else falls into place.

a bit of an update....

My neighbor has designed the stand /and canopy and we are going to pickup the wood and materials on Saturday to begin the construction. Equipment wise, im still in the same spot but im now looking at possibly investing in LEDs like the Aqua Illuminations but that wont happen til late this year and will most likely be the very last piece of the puzzle.

Right now im focused on finding a return pump, choosing a skimmer, and getting the stand built.

For skimmer, Im thinking of a bigger SWC Cone like the 180 or the SWC 250 Extreme. Im trying to get the most skimmer for the buck and my SWC 160 cone is a champ.

Current Livestock list (to be transferred from my 72 to the new 150)
1-Majestic Angel
1-Regal Angel
1-Multibarred Angel
1-Multicolored Angel
1-Hippo Tang
2-Ocellaris Clowns
1-Male Lyretail Anthia
1-Swissguard Basslet
1-Leopard Wrasse
1-Longnose Hawkfish
1-Wheeler Goby

(yes all these fish are in my 72 bowfront...)

lol... hes an amazing carpenter but does it on the side. Hes actually doing me a favor so i doubt he would do this for someone else. I will post pics when its done and if hes interested in making some more stands i'll post.

I cant say enuff about the furniture this guy has built... pics will follow.

Hey, I'm finally about to set up my tank by Reef Savvy with the same overflow. What are you going to do about check valves, or is your sump big enough to handle all the water during a power outage? I'm trying to think of a way to break the siphon, I have one idea, but I'm not sure if it will work. I've never used a check valve before, so I don't know which kind I should get. I'm just wondering what you are going to do.

good question cane... havent given it much thought yet but I plan on having the sump water level about only 2/3 full so to accomodate the extra water in case of a power outage. I dont currently have a check valve and am curious as to how I should plumb my setup. There has to be a way to break the siphon....

jgoal, any ideas??? dont you have the same overflow? If not i'll check with Felix for ideas.

Hey guys, I have a reef savvy set up also. I bought a check valve for the return pump with the advice from Carlos or "eon". This has worked out great so far. I have tested it out by turning off my return pump and all the water stays where it's supposed to. It was also recommended to me to keep a spare check valve in case it goes bad. So I bought a spare just in case.

What do you think is the best check valve, the swing/flapper kind or the George Fisher/Wye kind? I will be putting bulkheads on either one, for easier maintenence. I can see them both getting too much coralline, tube worms, etc to cause them to stop working, so maintenence is necessary. Does anybody have experience with both and can say the pros and cons of each and wich they think is better.
