Gig la

Pulled the trigger on a gig from LA. Hoping it comes in healthy. Hospital tank is on stand by waiting for his arrival Tuesday. Will do my best to keep this thread updated on progress.
Does anyone have any experience with gigs from LA. What can I expect its condition to be in. This is not a DD purchase.

I have not purchased a gig from LA but others have had mixed results. I purchased small gigs from Blue Zoo, and all arrived in different states of health, from good to dead (delayed shipment that arrived a day late). Unfortunately, none of them made it, even with treatment with both Cipro and Septra. That said, I purchased 2 gigs from two different LFS, and both are doing well, without treatment. I'm hoping this latest crop of gigs will be in good condition. Definitely keep this thread updated, and include lots of photos! Good luck!

Will do! My tank is just over the one year mark and has been set up for a mag or gig. Was waiting for the right situation for me to order. I would have to drive a couple hundred miles in any direction to find a decent LFS so almost all my orders com from LA or DD. I have a Kole from DD that has done nothing but awesome. The Gig will be the ultimate test of my aquatic abilities. Have been reading up on the medication thread as to get all my ducks in a row for the hospital tank.

photos will start tomorrow! Got my confirmation, its on its way. Hospital will be up and running and cipro was delayed a day...thanks usps. So both cipro and nem will be here around the same time. Should I medicate immediately after acclimation or wait till lights out on the first day?

I would put it in a QT first and observe it carefully. Have your HT ready at temperature (unless your QT is also your HT). From experience ordering gigs from LA, 9 out of 10 you will need to treat. Don't be fooled by the initial reaction when you place it in the qt. Almost all gigs will give the appearance of being healthy during the first couple of hours, but the proof will be in the next 24-48 hours and then the following week after that. At first deflation treat right away, don't wait for a second deflation. The sooner you treat it on time the higher chances you have to bring it back to health.

Thanks for the info Clorox! HT/QT is set up just for him. UPS is a PITA! Says my package will arrive today, but not at the prescribed time due to severe weather!!!! There is no severe weather!!!!! This is the only flaw to LA. FedEx is soooo much better with there overnights. Oh well, Hope they don't screw up too bad. At the current time the nem has been in the bag for 11 hours, should be here by noon I hope.

SOOOO...has been on the delivery truck for 2 hours now....no sign yet. I have my old halides over the qt tank. 2 150w and actinics. for got how nice the halides look! Wish I could get me LED's to look like that! I am a 10-14000k fan....the 20 kills me but at least its not pink/purple lol Will update with pics as soon as he is here.

Go easy on the lights at the beginning, I would use only actinics during the first few hours and then increase gradually intensity. This is something you 'play' by visually carefully observing how the gig reacts. Hopefully they sent you a healthy specimen.

I got a green! I got a green! Wooohooo! So after ups racking my nerves, the nem got here 3 hours late looking like death! His mouth was completely inside out, showing insides and all. As he warmed in the bag it pushed its mouth out like a cone almost. Once acclimated and in the tank the mouth has closed up a bit. Its now about 1/4" open. He has inflated so the clock is ticking. Picks in just a moment!

As for Amoo's scoring sytem. Before acclimation in the bag was probably an 8. After acclimation and in the tank it gets a 3. Mouth is slightly open, inflated, and responsive to tough.

what size did you order? Is that a regular size coffee cup? I've been debating a regular LA gig for a long time.

Thnx
John

That is going to be a nice green. I would see how he does before start on treatment. If he deflates at all, change the water and treat. It is important that you chang eall the water when he deflates because IMO, anemone deflates because they want to get rid of the "bad/infected juice (bad mojo so to speak)" inside them. In the wild the current wash this away and they will inflates with new clean water. By changing water, you do the same thing as the current would have.

I ordered the medium. I don't think it has fully inflated yet to max size. Been in QT for about an hour and some change now and is about 4" diameter.

Thanks OrionN and worm. Cipro is cocked and ready, 30 gallons of water in the shute. Bring it on! Seems to be expelling dead zooanthella now. Pooping out some dark brown black stuff. Will keep this updated. This guy looked dead in the bag. Aftr warming and acclimation he took right off.

Hey take some pictures too. It will help others see what you mean by "pooping out some dark brown black stuff" that have never seen it before.

Will try if he does it again. Lasted about half hour with the PH on, then started to detach. Sitting directly under the outlet of the HOB, still about the same as earlier. Mouth open about 1/4" Still nowhere near out of the woods. Will post pics before lights out.
