Gig????

I have ordered a Gig from my LFS, they're getting it from Golden Marindo in Indonesia. I don't have a QT, so won't be able to treat if it starts to go down hill. I have a Mag and it seems fine.

Am I crazy? Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Thanks

MM

Yes, you're crazy.

If you've read any of the threads in this forum, EVERYONE suggests having a QT tank and Cipro on hand prior to receiving your gig. Gigs are typically pricey, so it's worth the investment of having the QT tank ready to go. While there are specimens that don't require treatment, they are rare in comparison to those that do.

Having a healthy mag has no bearing on a newly imported gig. I'm not sure why you mention it.

I'm assuming he means the gig may infect the mag and kill it. I'm guessing that's why he's asking if he's crazy.

Maybe you'll get lucky and they make it in better shape over in Ireland

Equipment for a HT is much cheaper than the cost of a nice anemone. If you that strap for cash, perhaps reefing is not really for you.

Yeah, like even a pasta strainer, a bucket and a powerhead with a foam attachment.
Qt for 45 to 60 $!

Seriously though, thank you for your comments. The negative people out there in Reeferland really need to chill. Thank you.

No one is being negative. It's just a bad idea to put a gig in your tank that has other anemones in it without it going into qt first. I hope you get lucky and don't end up losing the gig and your mag.

I think we were just trying to get the point across that it doesn't make much sense to risk introducing a gig without QTing it first. IME they don't handle "jet lag" very well, and need a nice place to rest before hitting the town.

Since you mentioned not having a QT, it infers that you know you should have one, but chose not to set one up for whatever reason. Some people might be offended by this, because without a QT, if the nem needs treatment it won't get it and will die. For the record, I'm not offended. Granted, I sometimes question this hobby as not being ethical, but then I'd be a hypocrite.

Fortunately, I've never had a sick gig transfer the pathogen to a mag. However a sick gig was able to kill an otherwise healthy haddoni. I suspect the same way happen with mertensii.

I have done two GIG's and lost them both. I bought a simple 10g QT tank. Small PH and a spare light I had. It really is worth it. Granted I have over 300G of real estate. Did not want to risk any of it.

Equipments needed for QT/HT in US dollars
10 gal tank 10-20 dollars
Heater 20 dollars
Cheap light 5 dollars
small power head 20 dollars
egg-crate 1 dollars

Overnight shipping for an anemone: 100.00 dollars

You can set on up for less than 100 dollars and a little counter space on your desk.

For me the cost of a nice Magnifica is about 150+ and nice Gigantea is 250+. The chance of a Gigantea get to me and live without treatment is <5%. Magnifica live without treatment is < 20%

I am sorry that you think that I am one of the "negative people".

Thank you OrionN.

Just need to source antibiotic. Another option would be to leave the Gig and get a Crispa? Not sure if the guys at the LFS would be impressed though!

5 gal is too small. I get at least 10 gal, but 20 gal is better. I use a 20 gal but only fill it 1/2 way. Any light is OK but you want to use 5000K or daylight light.

I have very little room and I am also concerned about 100% water changes every day. I don't have much space to store ready made RO salt water. If the heater and pump are self-contained in the unit, I presume I won't have to add any type of partition (egg crate etc.), just add an up-turned cup?

Thanks

I use a ten gallon tank but I don't fill it up all the way. I usually put about 5 gal of water. I feel like that is good enough unless the anemone is large. But I've only treated a few so others definitely know more about the best methods. I always use a ranco to control the temperature because I don't trust heaters, especially with a small water volume.

You might still need another power head since I'm assuming whatever comes with that tank is pretty weak.

If it is used do you really want to deal with their problems?

If they had a live animal in there it might have Ammonia in it and this might leach out of the silicone. Just saying... Who knows where it was, a 10g around here costs $10.

I recommended at least 10 gal tank. The light on that tank is too weak for anemone even just for a few days. You are better off with a 10!gal with clip on light and heater and small PH
You will just have to mix 5 gal salt each day. Put into the DT and I se DT water for treatment tank. If there is a will then there is a way. Good luck
