Hello so i might be setting up a 50g rimless tank and i was wonder how much light you need for an gigantea..And how much flow you need i have 2 400 watt pendents not being used but woulndnt 400 watts be to much over a 50g?

The gigantea would not mind the lighting you have but I think you would cook the tank with the heat. I would see if you could replace the 400s with 250s. I do not have much experience with giganteas though. Someone with better knowledge than me should chime in soon.

Quickcord is spot on.

Question is not the amount of light, it's the amount of heat. I'm not sure you can over-expose a gigantea - they are shallow water inverts from the tropics. From a heat and exposure perspective, you might be better off with a 400 watt farther away from the water surface than a 250 watt closer in. Since you have both lights, you might measure the temp from several distances for both bulbs/fixtures. Light diminishes based on the square of the distance from the source, so you can run some math to evaluate light versus distance.

Of course, you could also run your tank with a big sump or other means of controlling temp.

id use a 400w in a lumenarc reflector. I have mine under 2x250w in my 65g and it is very happy in the middle lower in the tank

I have had a Purple S Gigantea for over a month and its been very happy in the tank with 2x250Watt Pendants and 14k Phoenix bulbs. I didn't have as much flow as I do now when I first put it in my tank. In result, It moved around a little the first few days until I added twice the flow that I had previous. Right now I'm running 2 K3's, 2 K-N's and the return pump of about 550-600GPH. So thats 3100GPH - 3150GPH which is 42 times turn over rate

One K-N is pointing right at it about a foot away. The rest of the pumps are facing the glass bouncing off in directions and its been extremly happy with it. Also Eats like a pig.

Those 400Watt pendants would be great for the gig, but could raise temps like stated previously, also depends on what kind of reflectors you have on them as junk reflectors aren't going to do nearly what a good 250w reflector would do for you.

Ok now would a 48inch 4 bulb t-5 and a 48inch 2-bulb t-5 be enough? the dimensions are 44 by 12 by 22 Or would you still recomend the 400 watt halide?
