Gigantea

a purple gigantae showed up at my local shop this week as well, simply incredible, but im passing it over for a blue one! ill be taking it home tomorrow if it still looks as good as it did 36 hours ago!

good luck with yours!

I knew it was you that bought that blue one the second I heard that the store brought some in. Great score!

They look great, Tony. Do you think the blue one simply prefers less flow for some reason? It doesn't look like it's getting as much as it was before.

Not sure. If it makes any sense, I think part of the reason it looks like that is that the anemone is stiffer, or more robust, and thus sways less in the flow. It's only about 4" from where it was in the first video so I wouldn't have expected it to have had a significantly different flow pattern there.

The foot is really wedged deep into the crevasse which gives it the elongated look as opposed to round. It definitely has a much stronger foothold in the current than it had before.

nice find :)

i almost bought a smaller ( 4" ) yellow gigantea last week but quickly slapped myself back to reality. i can't believe they are touching that much with no ill effects. i had to move one of my BTA's when my blue gigantea moved a little to close. they touched for a second and i could tell they weren't going to be friends. :eek1:

But you bring up an interesting point that has has always bothered me about the conditions that I keep my gigantea in: all of the videos that I see of this species in the wild are in lower flow enviornments! Having never have been diving, I am not sure whether this is an artifact of photographer discretion, or a genuine difference between reqiurements in the ocean and in our aquaria. Thereare several examples in the below page.

:D

Great videos. Thanks for the link.
I have not seen gigantea in its natural environment either (maybe someday), but it is still being moved quite a bit by massive amounts of water that are changing direction back and forth very quickly, something that is very difficult to replicate in our aquariums without actually producing waves. Its a little like a washing machine. The water doesn't move very far before it reverses, but it has plenty of force to rinse the dirt out of our clothes.

I also think that photographers are going to tend to take videos when it is easiest, during periods of low current.

Oh Tony. thats pretty. Must be our week for Purple's
I have a Purple one on it's way here tommorrow. We'll see how it fairs.

My yellow one is now attached to the side glass at the base of the rock and the meeting of the sand:( Nothing like seeing it's pretty purple foot from that end.

Not sure what the deal is with that but it seems happy. Definetly not going to be yellow by any means. And has definetly moved OUT of the flow. It moves but not alot. I will try to get you a video and we can compare the twos flow.

And i can agree. I think i am setting up a tank for them all by therselves when we move.

I have always thought that H. Magnifica and S. Gigantea were more closely related than their scientific names imply. The fact that yours are making physical contact without fighting, really makes me think someone made a mistake when placing them in different families.

I have had a small Gigantea for the past few weeks, and it withdrew like yours did, but worse. Nothing but a few tentacles pocked out the top. Just like Magnifica does. Mine was also fine the next morning.

I hope you don't mind, but I just checked out all your videos and and pic's on Photobucket. All I can say is WOW, and that your Magnifica is incredible.

Day 15 now. I'll start off by apologizing.. Afraid I don't have any pictures for this update on account that I ended up spending all day yesterday on working on the tank room, and didn't end up having any time for pictures. And because yesterday was all about the plumbing, today was a catch up day for other chores. Seems to me a good project manager should always double the estimates, double them again, and maybe double them again for good measure. What should have taken perhaps a more competent plumber maybe only about 4 hours took me 12 and no fewer than 4 trips back to Home Depot! Urg. But on the bright side, my tank room now has plumbing.

Anyhow, the real acid test for me this last week was that I was away from home for 4 days cavorting lakeside, as one might be want to do come the hot days of summer.

Came home to find the blue carpet has moved, to a spot that unfortunately I can see it liking a lot, but not me so much (although it's better than cozied up to the ritteri). It's just that it's right in the back of the tank which is going to make photo ops really hard. At any rate, I remind myself that the tank it's in is temporary and within a few weeks hopefully, I'll have a new tank running which will open up different options.

Strangely the purple, which I had thought originally had at best a 50/50 chance, is doing really well. Eats mysis unassisted and is just generally looking better and better every day. The blue is sticky, but doesn't really eat unassisted (ie., it will eat if the food is placed right in the mouth - but anywhere else it just eventually lets go). This does worry me a little.

I'll try to have some updated pictures soon. At least the purple will be easy to photograph. I might have to resort to top-downs for the blue.

Seriously overdue update, but at least I can offer photos this time.

I guess this would be about day 38 for the blue, and somewhere around 24 for the purple.

So, basically, I kind of freaked out by the lack of healthy progression on the blue and moved it into a different tank where I can nurse it a little better. The only problem is ... well, you'll see the pictures and you'll see why I didn't want to move the carpet into my 40g with the other two gigantea carpets I keep (green for 3 years now, brown/yellow for 4 years now).

The main problem was that it isn't sticky enough to swallow food before it fell off or was stolen (my 110g tank has a peppermint shrimp and a cleaner shrimp who are very adept at stealing food). The 40g has nothing that would steal food, so hopefully without that hassle, it will be able to eat and hopefully get its strength up.

To me comparing the photos to earlier photos, it's clear to me the blue has lost biomass and colour. So there is still an uphill climb ahead.

Here are some photos of my 40g carpet setup. I'm embarrassed to show these because the two older carpets outgrew this tank a long time ago. and I'm still limping along with them in there. They really need to go into a larger tank soon. I'm working on it, but .. ah .. yeah, it's a slow go. There are two clowns and a porcelain crab in there. ... you really have to work hard to find them some days.

great updates, congrats on all your success with them, i hope the blue pulls thru, dont be afraid to assist it in getting a meal i have helped a couple rbta come back from total tentacle loss with direct feedings.

those are some beauties you have, thanks for the update and awesome pics. :)

my blue had stopped eating for a quite a while too, i would place some mysis on his tentacles ( still very sticky ) and he would just hold onto them for a minute then let them go, same with the krill bits. last night i tried a 3/8" section of silverside and placed it as close to the mouth as possible and he eventually opened up and pushed it in. hopefully your guy will smarten up too.

Sadly, the blue did not make it. No matter what I tried, it never developed a strong feed response. I was away from home for a week in the beginning of August, and when I had come home there was no trace of it.

I still have the green and the brown and the purple. The green and brown continue to be large and strong. The purple is not very strong, despite that it seems to have a feeding response, it has lost a lot of biomass. It had moved itself into a shaded area of the tank it's in and stayed there and I think it wasn't getting enough light where it was. Funny that you bumped this thread back up today because I had actually decided to take action last night and rearrange things to help it out a little. I rigged up some rope to lift my ritteri rock up and get the rock the carpet was on (which was a structural piece for the bommie the ritteri sits on), wiggled the rock out and replaced it with a similar piece. It was quite the scene.

So we'll see where things go from here.
