I got this little guy yesterday after dripping, temp and salinity check he was in, it opened right away and was fine. This morning he was on his side close to the plate coral!! can the plate hurt this guy? he is not opening all the way yet the lights went off about 10 minutes ago. What should I do? they had this guy for 3 months at the LFS. here is a picture of it.

hes going to get huge too! I almost bought one yesterday too, but i went with a derasa instead

a 55 gallon tank wont last that long, they get over 3 feet, will probibly be 1 foot in about 4 months, so. Whahahahahaha. A good excuse to get a bigger tank.lol.

I'm a bit worried he keeps flipping over, so I put a plastic box under need to keeping from flipping but this is what he looks now! Do this guys attach? See the lower right side of the mantle is were the plate tentacle was touching it this morning, is kind of retracted.

Mine's been acting a little like that- with no plate coral nearby. It turned itself a little on the substrate, and has stayed since. I noticed some of the slightly shrinking like yours....Mine was placed in the tank (55g mixed reef, 220w VHO + 40w NO actinic) one week ago yesterday around noon.
I checked my Calcium level and this monster sucked it down pretty well, (even with adding B-Ionic and Kalk....need to add more I guess!!) so I added more and it seemed to help. Hope it helps you, too!

Thanks guys, now he moves side to side but can't flip :) I'll let you guys know how he's doing. Thanks for all your help.

I have had two clams in the past that will not stop flipping and turning until I let them go and they found a nice place they liked and settled in. This has mostly happened with my derasas including my 18 incher. My smaller 8 inch will flip in the water until it finds a sutible place it likes. You may try moving your plate and just putting ur clam uprigth where ever he ends up.

I put him away from the plate and just on the sand. But he is still not opening the way it did the first day ??? he still reacts to movement. I feed phyto once a week. My crocea and maxima are doing fine, maxima is been there for 8 months and crocea about 4. Do you think the plate had to do something with it?

That picture definatly looks better then the last. He probably just went through a spaz or something. Good luck with it.
