Gill flukes

I have never dealt with gill flukes before, but I hear more and more people talking about them.

My question is: will hyposalinity do anything to remediate gill flukes? I would imagine that if they are invertebrates, then yes. I just want to double check

Hypo will not impact flukes.

I give each fish a formalin bath before they go into QT ... formalin is effective against flukes as well as brooklynella.

The cupramine copper FAQ indicates that cupramine is effective against fluke.

Just checking. I'm writing an article and needed to insert this. I'll take this as a truth (I'm not questioning you), but I'm wondering why and if this has been verified.

I'd suggest looking up Noga's book on fish health.

As for hyposalinity and flukes, it will work for some species, as will FW dips. There are also species found on estuarine fish that will not be effected by hypo or FW dips. Formalin and praziquantel work for those.

Hyposalinity has not been effective for me in treating flukes, but I haven't used that method for years because of an increased incidence in Uronema infections, and I never went as low as people do now (1.009????) I used the standard from the original paper by Cheung - 1.0125

Just to clarify; if you plan on using FW dips or formalin baths for gill flukes, you must immediately move the fish to an uninfected tank. In fact, you may have to do this multiple times if you are dealing with an egglaying species of fluke. Some public aquariums used to try and "out run" flukes by having two systems - FW or formalin dipping as they moved the fish between the systems, sterilizing each system in turn. What a HUGE amount of water that used!

As Bill pointed out, praziquantel will work, and has the added bonus of working in-situ, with just a water change or two during the process (depending on which treatment you use).

Kevin2000 had a vital point, if you are writing an article on fish diseases; you should already know what to do from prior experience. At the very least, as Bill suggests, reference Noga's book.
