Just a side note. You asked to be informed about the xenia addition to my tank. After very slow growth, it's now going away at a pretty quick rate. The xenia is shrinking and a couple small sections are just about gone completely. I may have got ahead of the PO4? The tank is now running 2-5ppm Nitrate.

Xenia need PO4 to survive , about 0,04 ppm. It also hates high nitrates, but 2-5 should be ok.
What tests are you using to measure PO4 and NO3 ?

smh looking on these pics then on my tank I don't feel worthy!!!
that tank is awesome

Thanks.. every tank is worthy and reflects your own skills and knowledge. Both can be learned in time. I was also once a newbie who was drooling ot others pictures, the inspired me. Now i am glad a can inspire others...

I use a Hanna checker (713 low range) for PO4 and Salifert for NO3. The Xenia can go away. I put it in the tank to use the high nitrates I had at the time, but the low PO4 that was not available to it, made it not grow. It wont hurt my feelings if it melts away. Tonight as I post this, the very patch I was in reference to in my last post. Is just about gone now. Something in my tank has shifted for the good. Things are happening in a good way right now. I'm happy to see that it isn't because of massive water changes either. Just patience and trusting what I see and not my PO4 test. My hanna checker has told me zero PO4 for a long time now.

I have seen people struggle with high nitrate (25+) for a long while because they had 0,0 phosphate. They had NO Growth and pale colors. They were very hesitant at first to dose phosphate. Finally after closely monitored daily dosing of phosphate for a strech of time, the PO4 went up and the nitrate started to go down.

Just yesterday i spoke to one guy who finally saw his corals were starting to grow again after a long period of high nitrate and no growth.

One thing you need to be sure of before starting to dose anything.... make sure the test kit you use is a reliable one !
I have seen people dosing PO4 when their PO4 was already skyhigh, because the were using an outdated or "known" unreliable PO4 test.

As I mentioned before. My PO4 test has read zero for long time now. Yet I still think there is phosphate in excess as there is algae. A red algae. Cotton candy is what I believe it's refered to. I got a couple Mexican turbo snails and they eat it and have done a great job cleaning it up for me.

To be honest I'm really at a loss where to start as I'd like to be in the correct starting position. As it stands my tank doesn't grow and hasn't grown any coral. I've been thinking of doing a lights out period and maybe I'd get a better reading of PO4 and NO3. It does however seem as though I'm on a good path as things appear to be getting better in the tank.

While most people like their po4 and no3 unmeasurable low is prefer to measure mine and set them at po4 0,04-0,06ppm and no3 at 1-2,5ppm.
Algeas i control with animals.
Do you have a tank thread ? Link me to it.

I do not currently have a thread. Sorry. I suppose I could start one. Document an intervention kind of thing.

Looks great! I hope it grows taller for you. That would make a real show!

What's that front and right of the sea pen, growing out of the grey tube?

Glenn, I have been directed to you regarding a horrible algae plague I have. Thread here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2473103&page=2

If you have a chance could you conta tme either in the thread or joel [at] Ostrows [dot] us? I looked at your video on "caustic soda" but don't know if this can help me....

Cheers

Glenn, did you see this post?

This guy is having one heck of s time and ready to bleach the system. If you wouldn't mind maybe helping? If you can that is.
