Golan's 90G Reef

Update on the sump...

I bought 6 acrylic baffles that were cut out to fit snug in te glass 29g tank. Cost - $25

I also bought four 1.5" x1.5" acrylic pieces to help suspend the center baffles from the bottom of the tank - i thought that would help hold the acrylc in place rather than depend on the silicone only to holdit up.

I'll have the sump photos posted as soon as it is all done.

hey guys...regarding the sump.
What if the refuge in the middle was 10" instead of 13" - ok?
it's a 30" long sump.

I have the same design as what your doing. I like the fuge in the middle. The megaflow is only rated for 600gph so stay with the mag 9.5. Like someone said get a auto top off. I have the Tunze osmolator it is worth every penny. It will be a hassle if you don't.

i am a bit overwhlemed with the amount of space the in-sump urchin pro + mag 3 pump is taken up and the return pump.

my refuge might only be 8"-10" long - will that work?

I have a 90G/30G and did similar. I have dual overflows, L&R so I split it like shown below. I like the middle return design.

do you have a little ruber maid thing under the sump incase of overflow?

guys...im gonna plumb everything under my intake and return pump with flexible hose (no pvc) - any problem with that?

I have almost exactly the same setup you have - 90g AGA and a 30g sump that I'm about to create out of a tank. I thought about using the return line as another drain, but was told on another board that the single drain could support 700-800gph, which I thought would be sufficient...but now I'm second guessing that.

What does the SeaSwirl do? Is that the unit that rotates through 2-8 different returns to create misc currents in the tank?

What type of ps are you going to use?

My sump will be in the basement, but elevated off the floor about 4', but I was going to use something like a Mag 18 (or equivalent) to pump water back up.

Here is a photo of the tank, sprayed black with krylon, and with the retrofit kit of 2x250w 14k hamiltons - i love it !!!!!

More photos to come soon.

Luckucat...we should definitely stay in touch and trade some info.

1. As far as the drains are concerned - i was going through the same dilema and i finally decided to put a durso on th 1" and drain to the sump\refuge and i am putting a bulkhead on the 3/4" and sealing it with a pvc end cap threaded. This way - i can always re-do that drain if i want to or use as a return. I am confident the flow restriction is not the drain but the holes in the overflow box - but i will not modify anything until the tank is running. I am using a 9.5 mag for return by the way.

2. The seaswirl is really cool - it rotates in 90 degrees and spreads the flow - i hate powerheads with passion :) check it out on www.sea-swirl.com

3. what is "ps" ?

Yes we should stay in touch..I'll pm you with my normal email address.

I like the idea of using the 3/4" return as another drain. With the tank I purchased the AGA overflow kit, which had a durso setup (I'm pretty sure that's what it is) for the 1" and a bulkhead and all for the 3/4", I would just need a durso setup for the 3/4".

I'm going to check out the seaswirl. ps = protein skimmer.

For your return, how are you going to mount this sea swirl to the top of your tank?

I too dislike powerheads, or the look of additional stuff in the tank - which is why I got this AGA. My 37g now has a ps, 2 powerheads, a heater and a drain line all clearly visible. One of my goals with the 90g was to move away from that.

Here's a photo of the sump\refuge that i am working on....its got the urchin pro on the left with mag3 3 baffles on each side of the sump for bubble traps, refuge in the middle, and a mag 9.5 will go on the right.
I will also have a filter sock with intake tube where the skimmer is.

It wouldn't do much if I had an overflow (which wont happen anyway). Its just to catch the little spills and drips and such.

Looks like a good sump setup, I can't comment pros/cons because I don't have any experience with sumps myself. I'll probably wind up with a sump like yours, i have an outdoor pond mesh contain I'm going to use for the overflow into the sump, into which I can place filter media, but I'm also going to t the overflow to the sump and a fuge which will be a fairly large rubbermaid tub, with a tube sticking out that will dump water back to the sump for eventual return into the main tank.

Sea swirls look cool, I may get one of those down the road on my return.

I may wind up doing an in-tank return pump (submersible) vs. external initially, unless I can find a way to easily cut a hole in my sump tank (glass) to route to the external pump.
