Gold Flake Angel Keepers

Hi everyone,

I just have this passion for the Gold Flake angel, however after my third attempt I decided to quit trying having this fish.

They have great personality and are very brave fish.

My first attempt died with unknown causes, the second fish was in my aquarium for 32 hours and suddenly died, this third one seemed to be a promise but got this huge ich and died this evening.

Every single fish on my aquarium are ok at this moment.

Is this happening just to me ? Please tell me you have had long time experiences keeping this fish....

Thanks !

I got a goldflake from a fellow reefer here in CA. He only had it a week or two and it was just too big for his tank. He said the LFS he got it from had already QT'ed it for him so i didn't do any QT. I have had it for nearly a year now and he is incredible. He eats everything and i have never had any issue with him at all.
I know this doesn't help you much but i wanted you to hear a sucess story too!

Here is a pic of mine!

Describe your quarantine situation please.

+1

I've found that they should all be treated with Prazipro for flukes.

GoldFlakes, along with most large angels, tend to come in with internal parasites that need to be addressed for the fish's long term health. I always use Prazi and/or Metro to deal with internal parasites and I always QT for 2 months to observe for any other parasitic issues. GoldFlakes can be touchy, even with approrpiate precautions.
That being said, I have always had issues getting a Goldflake "fat". My first goldflake was 2.5" specimen from Phishybusiness. It was an amazing fish; great personality, ate everything, fattened up a bit and was very healthy. Unforunately, the fish was a casualty of a velvet outbreak that wiped out my tank 2 years ago; I still miss this fish. The second GF came from a wholesaler in HI, and it did not make it out of QT. After i dosed with Prazi, the fish appeared very bloated and died. I am assuming it was a die off of internal parasites. My current GF I have had for almost a year. It has great personality and is one of the most active fish in the tank.

I bought a GFA about 4 months ago. He looked very nice at the LFS and ate aggressively. I brought the fish home, placed him in my cycled QT. Man, I was pumped and ready for everything to go well. He ate but never seemed to have a bowel movement. He developed a ball near his anal outlet and this eventually turned into an abscess, significant bowel obstruction, and then systemic bacterial infection. There was nothing I could do but be bummed!! Man, they are beautiful fish! I am tempted to try again.

I have had mine for about a year. Definately may favorite. He is all over my 175 and loves aptasia. Very active and beautiful fish. I may have just got lucky and got a survivor. I will be moving him to my 225 gallon tank and hope he doesn't like corals as much as the aptasia.

I have has my Goldflake for a little over a year in my 400 gallon. He has been bulletproof- no issues whatsoever.
