Gold Spotted Foxface

I am looking to get one for my 90 gallon. I have read some stuff about them but i would like to learn more. So if you know anyone with one or you youself has one. I would like to know your experince with them and maybe a picture if possible. Anything helps. Thanks guys

I don't know that rabbitfish species, but I have a blue spotted rabbitfish, S corallinus. I would avoid the one you mentioned because at 16" it will get too big for your tank.

All the rabbits and foxfaces are great fish - mellow and hardy, IME. I'd pick one you like that is in the 11" range or less. Try wetwebmedia to get a look at some different species, that site is good about giving you realistic sizes. Diver's Den has a pretty nice selection.

In case you don't know, rabbitfish and foxfaces are venomous, but you are unlikely to get stuck unless you blunder into the fish. I think its the dorsal spines that carry venom. I've had mine many years - got it at 2" and now it's about 8" - and I've never had a problem.

Thanks lisa. Do you have a picture of your blue spotted rabbitfish? If you do can you post it i would like to see what they look like. I love rabbitfish i use to have one till my scribbled died for some reason and i use to have a One spot foxface when my tank first started but i had a huge ich breakout and it died.

I'm a terrible photographer, and these pics are almost a year old (date stamp is wrong)... I don't seem to have a very good one of the fish. Google images of Siganus corallinus. It is a great fish, and I'm very happy with it. BTW, still have all the fish in that tank, including a couple eels and a blue face angel that aren't in the three pics posted.

Any of the other rabbitfish would be better, due to size. We used to have one that was full size, and he was HUGE. If you like the spotted look, maybe S. stellatus is one you would like?

Gold spotted foxface rabbitfish requires 75 gal which is 15.7 inchs it would cost you $29.99...

where did you get that a 16 inch fish is fine in a 75 gallon? vendor sites are notorious for havig minimum tank size to fit more people's tanks (= too small)

yea i deffientely think that the 75 is to small. MAybe the 90 is pushing it. Do you think i could get away with it for a while until he gets to big for my tank or do you think it will be better to not add this fish at all. jd474 i will look at that fish as well.

jd474- I was just looking at the S.stellatus on liveaquaria.com, this is also a beautiful fish but i have seen that the max size of this fish is a little more then a foot and tank size 180g. But i also did look at the Gold spotted rabbitfish and that says 16 in and rate of a 100 gallon or larger. So i think if i were to go with any my gold spotted rabbitfish would be best bet?

i guess i didn't realize the stellatus got nearly as big. just be prepared to move him someday in the future, or have a home in mind (1000+ gal/public aq. donation, etc.). it will probably take 5 - 8 years, but he will be a big boy.

The Siganus Punctatus will get too big for your 90 gallon. They get to be 6-8" within a year or two from a size of 4".

don't go with minimum tank size from a vendor, even a good one like LA. they almost always undersize the minimum with larger fish to cover more commonly kept tanks. a 16" fish is too big for a 100 gallon aquarium (especially a 4 foot tank).

public aquariums tyically DO NOT take donated fish from hobbyists, do not count on this.

heres a couple pics of mine. hes about 7" tl right now and has grown very slow since he has hit the 6" range. very social and eats like crazy. not aggressive towards any other fish and not the least bit shy. so far he has never nipped any corals and i have everything from softies to sps. although i agree the tank size will not work long term

BTW,

Once my Orange Spot got to the 7-8" range he got a taste for Zoanthids.

I have a doliatus and it was the fastest growing fish I have ever kept. It went from a tiny little 1 1/2 inch juvie to a 8 incher in just about a year and a half in my 180. My bicolor foxface seems to be staying smaller and isn't growing at anything like that rate. Here are a few pics, I love both of these fish, rabbits are just awesome reef fish.

I have a punctatus in the 4" range... in my 300 gallon tank. I've had it for about a month. It took all of three days for it to clear every bit of bryopsis from my tank - the fish can EAT.

Tuna- Thanks for the info and yes they are beautiful fish. I did have a couple of others before phuzzykins-thanks looks like a beautiful fish. screwloose- Thank you. Yea it seems to be that way. I am still going to think about this one but i am on way to saying no because of the growth that is seen in this thread cultivatedcoral-Thanks for the info. Beautiful looking fish to. Yea i am still depbating but i am heading towards a no and possibley trying a different kind of foxface
