sorry, i havent updated this thread in quite a while. that tank is no more as i sold off most of the inhabitants and put the rest in the coral grow out tank in my classroom. i have started a new adventure with a 250 deep dimension tank in the same location under the solar tubes. it will be similar to mobert's tank in that i am raising an entire clutch of snowcasso clowns to put in it. everything that goes in the tank will be captive born or aquacultured - mostly a clown and bta tank. doesnt really fit at all here in the sps forum tho.

Hobo, I live in Longview Texas and your tank and thread has been a real inspiriation to me. We will be building in the next couple of years and have decided to go big, mainly because of this thread. I couldn't viably see myself paying 125 a month extra in halide bills and am going to go for a 400 with 3 tubes and 4 25watt actinic t-5's. I am shooting to have a low watt low maintenance setup at the lowest cost possible, minus skimmer, lights, flow and tank. I am looking into a wavebox though it wont be enough possibly paired with tunze or vortech. That said, it is going to be a challenge keeping the running watts under 400, though still much better than an extra 800 or so 8 hours a day. Thanks

Brad

Hope this catches on.

there are many people using sunlight in their tanks now, look back in the advanced section and there are some long threads of solar tanks that were put together long before mine.

i started a thread for my current tank (still under the solar tubes) here in case anyone is interested. i even have a couple of frags of sps that are coloring up nicely and growing :)

these are for a tank on the bottom floor of a 2 story house :) luckily there was only a closet above the area for the tank.

here is a pic of the 250 that i have in that space now

I know this is an old thread, but how are the corals doing now? Is growth pretty great, the colors look much better under solar tubes IMHO, I am looking to purchase a sapphire 280 build from a friend for 175!!!! And it has perfect seals, so I'm stealing it . I am going to ad an addition on to my house, and I would like to have a spot for my tank, I wanna do solar tubes and want to see how well it does. I uses halides now on my 55 gallon tank, LEDs on my 65 and t5s on the 50. I would like to do LEDs for the actnic lighting instead of halides or t5s, as a effort to reduce the cost and heat.

the current tank is doing well, here is an updated fts. not much in the tank to make it sps keeper worthy besides some caps, a birdsnest, anacropora, encrusting monti, digitata, and a stuber stag.

colors and growth are good, but i wouldnt say they are better than they were when i used to run halides (it has been a long time since then tho)
