Good bye to overpriced Red Hornets!!!

They are close enough but I have seen Red Hornets in person and to me these do not look the same and just to clarify I don't have them my self because I will not pay 150.00 a polyp but the point I was making was I have seen other members on the board state they had red hornets that needed to color up and they sold them at a lower price and they were bashed for calling them red hornets but you have a site doing the same and they get praised for selling them at a lower price.

But none the less they are still a good looking zoa for 25.00 a polyp.

lol close enough to save 150.00 a polyp imho..I can see how the people that payed 180+ a polyp would be ****ed..

But as the great P.T. Barnum said...“There's a sucker born every minute”
Anyone willing to pay those prices are nuts imho..Some south Pacific kid free dove and plucked a rock with a thousand of them on it for less than a buck lol

Price coming down is always a good thing, but now there is going to have to be 2 categories of red hornets. Those are close and for many will be the answer for red hornets but they are not the same. I have red hornets (no i did not spend 150-180, ebay baby) and they do look similiar but not the same.

Price coming down is a great thing so I hope to find a real deal one thru trades or one for a decent price.

Did anyone else notice the "Aussie Orchid" polyps they have? Very Purple/Blue Hornetish' but with sparkles coming from their ring and with the alternating skirts. IMO looks alot better that a Purple/Blue Hornet and with a better price. Just goes to show what is hiding undering the surface of the ocean.

I have true devil aurora's (red hornets) and these look nothing like mine lol the red ring is to fat on mine my rings are thin and crisp. And either im blind or I dont see a alternating skirt.

Those vivid polyps dont even have the trade mark white butt looking mouth in the center.

+1

No white mouth. Also, with true red hornets the alternating skirt and the ring are a nice matching red. The Vivid's have pink rings with red skirts.

I prefer the real deal I feel its very misleading of vivid to add the red hornet name to make a extra buck. Those are not red hornet, name them vivid's something else. You know whats gonna happen the avg joe is going to buy this and sell it to a local for 125 a polyp I guarantee you. And thats not right

vivid has a 5 polyp frag up right now and they look NOTHING like red hornets, the ring is way too fat, almost takes up the whole zoa! also the alternating skirt is hard to see : /

and i dont own any red hornets, so im not defending the tru ones because i paid a lot for a similar zoa.

i have a frag of the true red hornets and they are nothing that these people are selling them for. i am not mad or upset that i paid 180 for a polyp. you dont have to be a sucker to buy them either, i think the price will come down eventually and i bought mine to try and sell some so that does happen.
what i do get mad at is that you have to color them up and do whatever they can to make them look like red hornets? i reccently bleached my RH, PH and BH to the point where the skirts on my RH were almost see thru. but they bounced back nicely and are more stunning now then when i got them. so if you need to take a zoa, and try to make it change colors to something its not and claim its a RH is a farce.
let it stay a dull pink ringed zoa and let my red hornet be a hornet.

We apologize for the controversy. It is never our intention to be misleading. We do know that Vivid Red Hornet is similar but not exactly what hobbyists commonly agree to be Red Hornets. The price is also significantly lower and we are selling what is pictured.

In order to avoid further controversy, we will change the name shortly.

If you actually read the thread on that forum you would realize how difficult it is to achieve the full alternating skirt color. Many of th red ring colonies simply don't end up having red skirts. That being said, true red hornets are probably more common than most people realize.

Akwarius, you are correct, they are very common and very cheap. The price went through the roof when the consumer gave them a name and called them rare. Now the LFS and suppliers watch these forums and what do you think they will do? Raise the price sky high because the reefers gave them a name and created the false hype.

Does anyone know how long these have been around?

For at least 15 years. This is not a rare, hard to find or uncommon zoanthid. If someone has told you this, it isn't true. I see that a lot of people want to believe a story if the story is exciting or adds value to what they own. If some want to believe that, that's fine, but the truth of the matter is there was a time when you couldn't give this particular zoanthid away in a store. I have seen full colonies sit untouched for months at a time. Then someone gave them a name and the world believed the hype. A colony of 30 to 40 could be purchased for $ 45 on a 3" x 4" rock. Then naming, hype, false statements about rarity...and here we are.

If you haven't notices, this is why so many reefers here with many many years of experience have left. I can name 15 off the top of my head. Some of these guys were here when I joined and some came later. When they leave, I lose, you lose, the forum loses. zoa keeping loses. Why? A wealth of knowledge that can answer your questions, give back, help and share also leaves. If you haven't noticed, when was the last time you saw 650-IS350 post? Think for a minute? Can you now imagine why so many are leaving?

There is so much more to zoa keeping then names, hype, high prices, ID's
and false claims of something which is rare and expensive when it really isn't.

I just checked 5 pages back. There are 50 questions ask or post made in this forum in the last month with 5 or less replies. Many only have 1 or 2 replies and some have zero....zero REPLIES ???. Yet the minute a picture is posted, a picture with a name is posted, that thread lights up with 20, 40, 60 replies and hundreds of views. When your tank is in crisis and you are experiencing a serious issue which threatens your entire zoa population, will the names, the discussion of the names, or hype, false claims or pricing do anything to save your polyps? Then why are these topics the only topics which show any interest? I'm only asking.

The reason everyone is leaving and we have gone from filling the entire first page of this forum with dozens of active topics to 4 or 5 days of post on the first page is obvious. And yes, I have spoken to many of them, they are gone and more and more are leaving. But it seems that few seem to care. I learned a lot when I got my first tank from those guys who came before us. I valued those opinions, but I guess things have now changed.

I agree with the OP, lets say good bye to all of these over priced polyps and frags.
