well, bad news first. my g. falcatus (sp?) died early this week. i guess it wasnt much of a surprise, he had some kind of infection going on and had lost his eyes. R.I.P. Wilbur.

Onto to better news, i picked up a new mantis today. i went to my LFS just to check things out and couldnt pass up this little guy. he's jet black with what looks like redish orange coloration between his tail segments. he's only about an inch long. i'll post picks as soon as he's out of the bag!

Alright here are the first pics of my apparent girl.

I'm gonna go with Haptosquilla Glyptocercus for $300...any better speculations?

ya, i cant believe i didnt notice the problem when i bought it. it seemed normal but after a week or so it really became apparent. he still ate but i think it just got under his shell and into the nervous system maybe? im not sure, but he never pulled through.

alright well the little girl immediately dug a burrow as soon as she hit the water. she didnt touch the tiny hermits i put in there though. she found a nice cave in the rockwork and now she's stick out upside down...kinda funny lookin. any ideas on stuff to feed her if she doesnt go after the hermits? i was thinking mysis, krill seem a little big for her.

ok here are a couple pics of her in the new burrow, its about as clear as i can get.

Nice!
I feed my H. glyptocerus with artemia, krill, mysis and small crabs. She never leaves the burrow.

thats too bad, i was kinda hoping to get a more active one. Roy's list also says they arent very active. o well, at least she looks awesome! What do you use to feed yours?

Congrats on your new daughter ;-) I have a the green kind (scientific name escapes me at the moment, but we call it godzilla!)
She seems to be doing fine with flake food actually. I have frozen formula food I give as well. I don't find Godzilla to be in the least bit picky. Once she was FINALLY removed from my 72g display and put in my 10g former qt, she hid for a few days..but now she's out all the time...I LOVE watching her do flips after she catches her food!

ya one of my previous mantis ate flakes, that was what i call fun! watching that never got old.
Timmy- what kind of crabs do you feed yours, mine just seems to ignore the hermits?

I feed sometimes normal crabs like Paractaea monodi. I collect a lot of this species in the life rocks. I donÃ"šÃ‚´t feed hermit crabs.
