Good Price?

What's a good price for the following to buy in the secondary market:
155g custom tank with stand (stand needs refinishing)
brand new sump system
QMDX inline pump
oceanic skimmer
100lbs LR
4x60w light kit "rover com?"
$200 new of livestock

Also the a guy wants $350 to move the whole thing for me so I don't have to do a thing with it. Is that a good price? It sounded good to me.
 
at $2 a pound for live rock thenthe tank and stand and live stock.. it seems like a fair deal...

depends on how good of a job he does (why not move it yourself so that you learn how everything works)
 
$350 is to move it yes. SORRY, should have been more clear. I need to know how much is a fair offer to buy everything from him. I'm fearful to move it, half the reason I want to buy this is because I'm going to use some of the water in conditioning my other tank and if I screw up this water somehow....I'd be stuck. Plus there is the general no knowlege that I have about the sytem and how anything is setup other than the baiscs. I've never used a sump etc, and the $350 includes some education on how to use the system. The guy moving it is a professional tank cleaner/maintainer. And then there is the general deal with time. I work 7 days a week some days 12 hours a day.

After reading what people had to say and knowing my levels in my current 29g tank, I think there might be something wrong with the system? My levels never spiked. I've never seen anything over the minimums when I perform my test. Yet any fish I put in there dies, but the inverts live.
Perhaps my water has a contaminant? I keep getting the brown algae coming back anytime I leave the lights on for 8 hours a day for 3 consecutive days and have to wipe down the entire tank.

So buying an up and running tank is a way for me to enjoy the hobby now and reduce my current frustration, while still leaving me the other tank to explore with and run for 6 months or so before putting anything else in there.

If you have any thoughts on this please let me know. I'm just kind of frustrated at my inability to keep things alive in the other tank even though I'm so careful with levels and made sure it went through the nitrogen cycle etc.
 
I think he said about 4 foot long 4 foot wide and I don't remember how tall. It was designed to fit in a spot in the wall of his house I believe.

Here's where I start to show my ignorance. What makes a tank reef ready or what is overflow? Can you not put corals into a non RR tank? I know the tank is drilled with the holes for the sump. But right now I also know that it is FOWLR currently.
 
Reef Ready means there is a hole in the tank that allows the tank to drain into a sump and/or fuge. A non Reef Ready tank has no holes and you have to use a Overflow box to get the water to drain from the tank, (not the safes way to do it, but it is another way to skin a cat)

While the tank is down if it is not Reef Ready you could take it and have it drilled and it would be reef ready. however you do take the chance of cracking the tank? A chance most of us are willing to take, to avoid an accident with an over flow box.


Is the tank Acrylic or Glass?
 
OK, that's good. Either drilled or built in overflow is fine. Even if it's w/a hob overflow it would be workable but it's better w/holes or overflow. If it's 4ftX4ft it would have to be 15 inches tall in height. That would make a cool look down tank. Get some exact measurements for us and if it's glass or acrylic.
 
IMO half the fun is figuring everything out for yourself (w/ the help of folks on here of course). Doing all the research, reading all the forums, building stuff yourself, learning from your mistakes. But whatever works for you. If he wants 350 just to help you move it, what does he want for the tank?????
 
It's definitely drilled. That was my first question. It's also glass. The 15in tall sounds like what he said. I'll try and get a number, but their family is all sick with the flu right now, so I don't want to bug him anymore.
 
I like learning things too. You all don't know how much I've learned from reading your daily discussions! But I'm still learning. I am deifnitely NOT a builder of things though. I swear everytime I pick up a tool, I end up bleeding. I'm ok with that too though. I work too much to have time to build anything. But I do make time for maintaing. My big hesitation though right now is just making sure that I don't kill anything else. I can keep the 29g for learning and the big one for enjoyment.

That's what I'm trying to ascertain from you all: how much should I offer him for the tank?
 
I would offer him 450 and see what he says.. What is the worst he could say? NO? Then I would see if before paying him to move the tank see how many people could help you move it here on the board for some Pizza and Beer!! Just a thought.. But this way it gives you a good Idea of seeing how everything work while you are helping set it back up incase there is a problem later you know what you are doing..

Yes, it is true. These guys are pizzaholics. Sometimes they can get a cheap fix to thier addiction with hot wings instead of pizza.
Lonnie has a very good point. It is a good chance to get some hands on with your tank, that is very important. And it also gives you a chance to meet quit a few people here. It also give them a chance at their pizza fix.
 
Well I think I need to keep that in mind then. I'd love to have some people over to whip me into shape and teach me some things while setting it up. :)

Does everyone else agree that $450 is a good starting price? I have a call out to find the exact measurements.
 
I would say find the exact dimensions (we can get gallons from that) find out who the manufacturer is and I would be curious how many over flows it has one or two depending on size. I would want two for safety reasons but depending on the size it may have one center?

Let us know that and then I could give a good price comparison. $450 does not sound bad but a lot of unknowns still.
