Gorilla Crab Removal

First of all I would love to share the pictures of the tank but the pic's are to large to convert unless someone can tell me how to convert them.
Anyway the issue at hand is one gorilla crab and one mantis shrimp.
The gorilla is the size of a silver dollar and I am sure he is very hungry and eating my cool stuff.
The Mantis I guess I will try the trap and see what kind of luck I have with that.
If I can catch an Octopus then the crab and the shrimp should be easy-Ha Ha.
Thank you all for any help,

Steve

Hello Steve I can't wait to see your tank! Here is the tread that helped me learn how to post on RC I use photobucket.com to host my pictures very easy and free.

To get out the guys you want to this is the best forum to find info about all the different technics. I am a stand with my gloved hand in the tank, with my big tweezers and sneak up on them gal. :D

Just one mantis and one big gorilla left that I can see. There was a guy on here who did a loop of fishing line in airline tubing to snag his mantis that was pretty cool.

Keep us posted on what's going on and get the pics up good luck!

Generally the easiest way to catch crabs without removing the rock(s) from the tank is to trap them using a glass tilted against a rock in the area where they hide out with a piece of fresh raw shrimp at the bottom of the glass. Usually about a 4-6" tall glass tilted at about a 45 degree angle will work fine, and you may also need to weight the bait down with something. Do this about 1/2 to 1 hr. after lights out and then check the glass again in a couple hrs. or in the morning I've even caught smaller crabs using an extra tall shot glass.

Thank you Winter / Howard,
I will head to the LFS and get some shrimp and give it a shot. This Gorilla is really big, about the size of a silver dollar.
I will also try the trap for the mantis.

Also I will get on photo bucket and try that to get the pics posted as richard sent some great stuff.
PS have ethier of you seen a wrasse that has a white stripe on the top and the rest seems black? It was a hitch hiker on the rock.

Great news - 2 gorilla crabs in the fuge and the trap in back in the tank. I used a modified version of the trapthat is on TBS's web page. I used a propel water bottle, the one with the wide mouth on it. I cut the top off then turned it inside. I think that the wider mouth will let them in to the bottle easier.

Thank you again for all your help,
Steve

Gorilla crabs are fun!

I had one that was a couple inches across. Never caught it and haven't seen it in months.

I don't see as much redecorating in the tank, so I think it may be toast.

I do still see smaller ones though. I try to trap them with mixed luck.

The ones I catch go into the mantis tank.

Though I have at least 2 other mantis in my display tank. One pretty small and the other is fairly large. I'm not bothering to catch those 2. I know where they live and will try to feed them, to keep some of the predation down.

The one drawback is I'm more leery to stick my hand in the tank and work now. Also gotta get some more snails and hermits....

Good job..

I stressed the mantis and gorilla catching at first. I ccaught 2 mantis and put them in their on tank, then when I caught the gorillas, I fed them to the mantises. In hind site... let the mantis take out the gorillas in the main tank. A lot easier than the hours spent trying the catch all of them. They wont do much harm.. these arent the tank shattering kind people talk about. Leave them and enjoy them.
