Got a Gigas

The LFS got a Gigas in the other day. Considering how big they get, and that not many people in my area have a tank big enough, I knew if someone else got it, and it didn't die, I would end up with it eventually. So, I got it. Looks cool, not super colorful, kind of blue rimed like a derasa. Setting on the sandbed, with about 3 feet of clearance all around it for future growth.

I got one two. Had it for 6 years grew from a 1" baby.

It's about 10" now. Grew about 1/2" per month. Started adding thickness about a year ago so growth isn't as obvious. Plus I wasn't keeping up on calcium like I should.

Great clam Aurora!! how big is yoru tank? i love the bright red of the anemone in the back.

When I was at Lizard Island in 1998, there were some gigas in the clam gardens that had become so big that crocea clams had fully embedded themselves along the edge of the thick gigas' shells. I would love to see that in someone's home aquarium. With a 150, I'm sticking only with croceas and maximas for now, but I may try a derasa in the future.

Any pics?

I have a lot of abovewater pics and digital video, but unfortunately, I dind't get any underwater footage. If you ever get the chance though, you should try to make it out to Lizard Island at least once. Between the monitor lizards, great service and accomodations, wonderful beaches, and underwater sights, it's an unforgettable place to visit. Maybe I'll try to get out there again for my 10-year anniversary. There have to be at least a few people on RC who've been out to Lizard Island and taken some footage of the clam garden and reefs.
