got a new purple haddoni - concerned

I picked a purple haddoni yesterday. He's been in my tank for almost 24hrs now and he's not yet attached. I have 2 other haddonis which are doing great so don't believe anything is off with my water. All my levels are good. How long can it take them sometimes to attach? I tried digging him a hole and putting him in there and packing the sand around him but he didnt like it one bit and just dug himself right out. He was not attached at the LFS either though. I asked about that and they said they had just moved him because he was walking all over their tank and stinging other corals. He is definitely sticky when i touched him though. Any thoughts? I will try to get some pics
 
Ok everyone, just got home and he's not looking good at all. Here is a pick:



I have no QT tank to be able to treat him as he must be sick. Anyone in the Chicagoland area can offer some help? Should i contact the LFS to possibly return it?
 
It looks healthy too me, it may be voiding something it ate, which might be preventing it from moving at the moment. Give it a small piece of rock to grab, it needs to attach to something or it will get sucked into a power head or overflow.
 
Well, i did not feed it and neither did the LFS...Why would his mouth be open like that all day? Doesn't that indicate health issues or is it just stress? Also what would prevent it from attaching to something? He was close to rock last night but he moved away.

My other 2 haddonis pretty much attahced themselves right away after i introduced them so this is a first for me.
 
It has its mouth open for some reason, just give it some time to acclimate. I would think it will close its mouth by the end of the day.

Did you see any damage to its foot from the LFS removing it?
 
He wasn't attached at the LFS, so no i did not see damage. I saw it twice over a 1 week period at the LFS and neither of those times was it attached. The tank it was in at the LFS did not have any sand in it either.
 
I like the color, I hope it does well for you. I would not worry just because the mouth is open, unless it stays open for more than a day.

You have 3 haddoni? Do you have a huge tank?
 
That anemone is a very beautiful anemone and it does need treatment. It does not cost a lot to have a treatment tank. Small tank power head and heater. any old light will do. You can get everything for less than you pay for that anemone.
Sooner is much better.
Then there is the problem of transmitting the sickness to your other anemones.

Since my last post here I moved him over to another spot and seems to have turned it around for him. He's now attached and mouth is pretty much closed up now. Will post another pic shortly. Probably just stressed out acclimating and not finding his ideal spot.

I would still get a tank and medicine ready, in the event that there are other problems.

Minh has had good luck with the process, and calling it when he sees it.
 
Ok here's a pic i just took. I thought he attached himself but after looking closer and kind of moving him, i see that he really isn't so he may well be sick.



So a small tank, power head and heater with any old light...How small is small? I have a plastic 5 gallon tank on hand, could i use that? My logic would say no. As for the cypro...where would i get that?

Another question would be setting up the tank. Can i just mix up some fresh saltwater and fill the tank, and add piece of rock from my sump? Do I have to worry about a cycle?

Going to keep a close eye on him next 1-2 days and act accordingly. Would be nice if he was all better in the morning...either that or will find him stuck on my mp40...well see.
 
I say he is sick, and if he is sick, he will pass it onto your other nems. My reasons for this are1) he is not attaching, 2) mouth seems to be open all the time and 3) his foot looks grey and kinda of wrinkely to me in that last photo to me. I have had all of my 7 haddoni be sick at one time or another, and the ALL showed these signs.

You really need a 10gal QT tank so that you can seperate the nem from a powerhead and heater. cipro you can get on ebay. Add the water from your DT tank to the Qt tank and put the new water in the DT tank. I mean a purple Nem probably didn't come cheap, so a $30 Qt tank seems a reasonable investment to me.

but then again I could be wrong, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Agreed, Cypro has been ordered. Will get a tank this week, heater I have. Will also get a small PH. Do I need an air stone ?
 
No airstone is needed, just point the PH at the surface for some adgitation. also use some eggcate at one end for equipment seperation from the nem.

Will do, thanks Daniel. He still has not attached this morning, his foot is just sitting there and he is like suspended in mid air.
 
Start treating as soon as you can -- and keep a very close eye on your other haddonis.

Years ago (( before Cypro )) I lost both a red S. haddoni and a tan one that had been in my care for 15+ years due to a new introduced one that was infected.
