Got a sea goblin!

great coloration, love the reds.
Like Greg said, its I didactylus, one of my three most fave scorpionfish.
Hope hes eating well

Hey Greg, got any pictures of your new stingfish? Derek told me it was super colorful.

Unfortunately, that fish has what we think is a swim bladder issue right out of the bag (positive buoyancy). We have given it a course of broad-spectrum antibiotics, but it doesn't seem to have responded well, so we're going to try Acetazolamide (Diamox) which works really well for non-PE buoyancy issues (edema) in SH.

If the fish doesn't respond, I think that's all we can do other than euthanizing it.

Frank, what are your two other faves? Inquiring minds and all that...

Knowing Frank, I'm bettting his "triumvirate" is Inimicus, Chorydactylus, and Rhinopias...anyhow, those are my "must-haves". ;)

Im sorry to hear about the stingfish. I find alot of swim bladder issues are from internal parasites, have you tried a formalyn dip...?

Nope, but it's worth a try. We have the fish in a small "critter keeper" that's sunk into its QT, and it walks around on the lid. It's too bad, because the fish wants to be a good eater for us.

im seriously thinking of setting up my 29 to house one of these guys and maybe a dwarf fuzzy/ cockatoo/another 'odd ball'. what equipment should i have to run the 29 sumpless? simpler is easier ATM.

We typically use HOB power filters on our smaller "simple" setups. Run one that's at least rated at 50% - 100% more volume that the tank, esp. if you're planning a high bioload. We generally don't skim our smaller setups, but they're mostly lightly-stocked. If you're planning a higher bioload than a couple of approprately-sized specimens, I'd run a good HOB skimmer as well.

wat do you use for lighting, how much sand and rock, how often WC? do you prefer biowheels on the simple setups or no?

Lisa--
Clearly Greg has read my book.... yes my triumvirate is listed as Greg identified
But my Rhinopias choice would be R aphanes

My sea goblin tank has nothing but two polyfilter covered powerheads, a healthy chaeto/caulerpa crop, and some live rock. The sand bed doesn't even fully cover the base. I just kinda threw it into a mound in the middle. the goblin does a pretty good job keeping the sand stirred up. I also have the benefit of having a very mature tank right next to this. Everyday I swap a few cups between the systems.

The goblin still isn't eating. I think ill toss in some chromis tomorrow.

My fu however took down his first damsel today. I'm so proud.

I did kind of like that word...as for the aphanes, my wallet hopes I never find one! ;)

Marc,

I'm not so sure your ghoul would even give chromis a look...we have a third specimen that is housed with a barnacle blenny we couldn't catch, and the blenny sits right beside the ghoul and shares the ghoul's pile of mysis. You'd likely have better luck with ghosties.

No interest in ghost shrimp. He came strait from the airport to my tank so he's had a rough couple of days. I think he just needs time.

Yeah...no doubt. One thing about this particular fish is they seem to take a bit longer to "get with the program".

He looks just like ours! Awesome! We had two, but the female arrived ill. I wish I could turn back time because I've been working on a treatment protocol that's been working for me when fish come in like that.

Question: Does yours ever "fan" their pectoral fins, or does he just bend in the very tips and quiver? Lemme find videos of mine so you can see what I'm talking about.

I rarely feed them when I first get them. If I buy one from the LFS, I never ask to see them eat. I don't want their bellies full during a stressful time. Stress draws perfusion away from the gut. A poorly perfused gut is not a happy functioning one, so I wait until they settle in to avoid digestion problems. There's no literature support.... it's just what I do because of things I've seen where I work (premature babies).

You want me to manuver around a stingfish with bouncy issues? Me no think so. His movements are not predictable. Not only does he just bob around when not in the critter keeper, but he freaks out because he bobs. I honestly wouldn't want to do any extra handling. If it was a lion, yes. But not him. I have the worse medical luck in the world....

My goblin only fanned when I netted him out at the wholeseller. Theres a good picture of it on the first page. My stingfish does it all the time though
