Got my first DSLR today... Nikon D40

I met up with Misled today and bought his 2yr old Nikon D40 from him. It came with a 55-200 lens, as well as an 18-55 lens. I've taken a little over 100 shots in the last few hours trying to get it all figured out, and here are a few shots that I felt pretty proud of.
The only modifications done to the photos was a resize and auto levels in Photoshop. Let me know what you think!

It may be obvious to some of you veterans out there, but these were just freehand shots, no tripod or anything of the sort...

The dog has blown highlights (maybe from the levels), and they are all way to "centered" for my tastes. Try and move the subject up, down, or side to side.

Thanks for the comments guys... I've still gotta figure out the details, levels and settings, but for the first time using an SLR, I was impressed with how user friendly this camera is.

Good shots!.. the D40 is a good camera. Ultra light and very user friendly.

Next step.... start shooting NEF (raw) so you can tweak your pics in ViewNX and really reap the benefits of using a DSLR!

have fun

Yeah, I've been reading up on RAW and the benefits of using that format over JPEG. I feel really comfortable with Photoshop 7, I've tried CS4, and just wasn't into it. Thanks

I JUST GOT A NIKON D60 is it better to use photshop or the program that came with the camera which was viewnx

I highly prefer Photoshop over anything else that I've used. I have both Photoshop 7 and CS4, but I wasn't impressed with CS4 to be honest.
