Grand Nano Build (pics)

Thanks Endy, currently trying to get a Filamented flasher wrasse out of the tank as it's picking on my tailspot blenny and my neon goby. You would think that with so little rock, it would be easy but those wrasses just know every single little hidding place and I don't want to disturb my aquascaping and corals. Going to try night fishing and see if that works. Wish me luck.

Update: Fish

Update: Fish

About two weeks ago, I saw a tiny 1.5 inch Coral Beauty at the LFS. He had an open wound on the top of his head and when I inquired about this fish, the store manager told me that the fish was a lost cause and that it wouldn't survive a week more. Being a sucker for the "underdog" or in this case, the "underfish" I said "I'll take him", knowing that I could give this fish some personalized attention/t.l.c and it would recoup nicely. The LFS guy gave me this look :eek1:, asked if I was serious and when he found out I was, gave me a big discount on the fish. Two weeks later, the fish is doing great and have recovered completely. Will post pictures later tonight.

And I present to you....

And I present to you....

My little Coral Beauty that could...first week, he wouldn't eat anything as the infection/open wound on his forehead was looking really bad. All he did was pick algae off the liverock. Now week two, he's eating mysis, cyclopeeze and small pellets and his wound has completely healed. Here's is a picture from today. You can tell by my Tailspot Blenny how small my Coral Beauty is in comparison. Both fish are 1 inche to an inch and a half.

By the way, does anyone know if Fungias or Open Brain corals move/crawl on the sandbed? Asking because I could have sworn that I when I placed all of them on the sandbed, I made sure to leave a lot of space between them and now a couple of them are overlapping each other.

And now.....

And now.....

My weekly random shot of my 225g....two buddies, my Purple Tang swimming together with my Yellow Tang not too far behind.

Thanks JimKelly, as most people see their tanks, I see mine as a work in progress. Just ordered some very nice pieces from LA-Diver's Den yesterday so I'm looking forward to getting those sometime early next week and posting pictures as soon as I do get them delivered.

Oh by the way, to answer your question...No, they don't try to kill each other. At first they displayed and chased each other for a couple of seconds but once the Yellow realized that the Purple Tang was the king of their castle, everything has been peaceful since. They swim together for the better part of the day now. And my Achilles hasn't shown any aggression towards any other fish in my tank either. It may be because I'm a heavy feeder and they don't have to compete for food much.

Good job saving the little coral beauty. That was cool of ya. Everything is looking good. Keep up with the updates.

Thanks Jason, the Coral Beauty is doing better everyday. His wound has completely healed.
On a sad note, my Regal Angel that I had in my 225g died yesterday. I had it for about 3 months and it was eating everything and was very healthy but I suspect a very large predator crab in my tank pinched it by its belly and it was never able to recover. When I took its dead body out, the angel was still fat and looked healthy other than the two large pinched holes on the bottom part of his body. So now i'm on a crab hunt to get the murderer out.

so, you took out the stock skimmer? Did you replace it with anything another skimmer?

Just curious what the odds of having some acros or other tougher sps are without a skimmer.

Yes, I did remove the stock skimmer as I did not feel it was doing an adequate job of removing unwanted matter. I did however replace it with a Tunze 9002 nano skimmer and I must say it does a great job. So far I have about 6 acros and only time will tell how well they do, but so far so good.

What kind of brain corals are those on your sandbed? How do you take care of one? Do you have to feed it?

Is your bubble coral hard to take care of? What/how often do you feed it? I would like to get one just like yours.

Thanks Fishy, the open brains and bubble coral have been some of the easiest corals to maintain IMO. I do target feed them a couple of times a week. I use a turkey baster to gently place Mysis shrimp on their feeding tentacles and they slowly gobble up the shrimp. Very hardy corals in my experience.

Sorry to hear about the Regal Angel. That bites. Hope you get that crab and teach him a lesson. Good luck with that.

Thanks Jason, yeah it really sucked because he was doing so well and I honestly thought I was out of the woods and was one of the few that was going to successfully keep a red sea regal for a very long period of time..guess not : (
Still haven't found the culprit but what I was able to do as a result of my regal dying was my rockwork. Since where the regal died was a very tough spot to get to, I had to move some rocks and had a mini rockslide and so I redid my rockwork in order to have more open swimming space for my Achilles who is doing great (knock on wood). I took out two 5 gallon buckets of liverock, one bucket full I placed in sump and the other I sold dirt cheap to a local reefer/acquaintance. All in all, I turned a huge loss into a bit of a silver lining by doing what I had been wanting to do now for about 5 months.

A bit more bad news...

A bit more bad news...

So my experiment has proved unsuccessful. I had decided to place some choice sps pieces in the RSM nano thinking that if I kept them high enough on the rock, that the PC lighting would be enough to keep them happy and colorful. Sad to report that's not the case :( 3 of 8 pieces are starting to show signs of browning out and I'm guessing that it's only a matter of time before the rest follow the same path  Flow isn't a problem and my parameters seem to be spot on so it leads me to believe that only the pc lighting is what isn't cutting it. Will post some pics in next couple of days.
