i did some searching on this site and didnt find what i needed to.

yesterday i bought a Novaculichthys macrolepidotus from a trusted LFS. originally i put a different one on hold 2 weeks ago but that one did a few days laters and this one was supposedly brought in at the same time (didnt really looka round last time i was there, just asked if they had this fish and they showed me the one that died later). i got it cause ive been looking for one for a while to add to my 55 reef. when i brought it home i noticed it was acting weird, not swimming around and kindof floating in the bag. back at the LFS it was swimming around fine, hiding a lot too. when i started adding water it swam around more in the bag so i thought it was fine. i added it to the tank and it imediately dove into the sand. this is normal as far as i know. a hour or so later i noticed half of him out of the sand with his head (out of the sand) wedged under LR rubble. he was slightly breathing. this morning he is completely wedge (or just laying) under a lil rock overhang so its hard to see him. he is still breathing but faintly.

my questions are is he acting normal or do you think he is on his death bed? i only have 1" of sand in most places with 2-3 ina few spots (where he chose to hide) so is this not enough? the wrasse is 2" long. should i try to gently pull him out from under the rock or see if he comes out on his own? i havent lost a fish from adding it to my tank for like 8 months so i dont want to start now, ive only lost them to jumping (trigger in dif tank) and damsels getting sucked into MJ.

any thoughts?

It may literally be days to a week until you see him. In this situation, patience is needed. Trying to find him daily to see if he is ok will just add to his stress level. He will come out when ready.

well dave i let nature take its course and scooped him up into a bag. :sad2:

i saw him a couple of times throughout the day and everytime he was upside down with a distended belly (swim bladder problem?). watched him for an hour because he was acting really weird and right when the light when out i saw him just floating upside down throughout the tank. hes in a bag now, going to call the LFS in the morning. got him yesterday... :/ seemed fine at the LFS but what can i do. first fish death from adding to a tank in 8 months. he also was bairly breathing.

sorry that happened to your wrasse. If he was gone that fast, I don't think there was much you could have done to change it.
