Green Haddoni Carpet/Goby Encounter

I added a Green Haddoni Carpet (about 6") to my tank about 3 weeks ago. Tonight, it seems that my spotted goby got a little too brave and got stung trying to steal food from the anenome. He got stung but got away, he does lok a little rough, there is a mucus that is surrounding him and he has little white dots on his fins. He is breathing fast, but its been about 30 mins and he is still alive. Can a goby survive a sting like that?

I am not really too fond of losing fish to the anenome so I was thinking of trying to add a clown that would host, I have heard that a clown will chase fish away that get to close. My questions is I have one false percula (tank raised) that is not hosting, I am not surprised as he is not wild. I would like to add another clown to host, what type should I add. FYI, the tank is a 180 gallon mixed reef with a few tangs, gobies, and one false percula clown. Thanks for the suggestions.

Ocellaris are not natural symbionts with haddoni, although in aquariums they do sometimes take to haddoni. I would say the mismatch is more the reason it is not going into the anemone rather than it being tank bred. My tank bred ocellaris very quickly took up with H. magnifica --an instinctive response. As far as species of clowns that will likely go to your haddoni, clarkii is a natural symbiont as is the sebae clownfish (A. sebae).

Hope your goby pulls through. Maybe he learned his lesson.

The goby didnt make it, he seemed to be swimmign disoriented and ended up back in the carpet, although it is interesting that the carpet did not choose to consume him? I think I am going to try adding a wild Clarkii as sugessted by garygb, but can I add this with the Percula I have now ir will it be a problem?

I think that you will have an issue with the clarkii and perc. together. A while ago I used to have a 3 stripe damsel in my tank with a pair of clarkiis. While it isn't a clown they are in the same family, and the pattern is similar to a clown. They never bother any other fish, but the 3 stripe was always chased.

My clarkii pair love their haddoni carpet, only leave it to kick up sand and to eat.

Yeah, Todd might be right about feuding between the two specimen. It is 180 gallons, so there might not be too much of a problem, but it would be a safer bet to remove the percula I suppose. And you could go with a tank bred clarkii if you wanted. It would almost definitely go to the anemone. Clarkii clowns are somewhat aggressive and grow quickly.

Oops, missed the part about it being 180 gallons. Like Gary said it might work, but I am not sure I would want to risk it.

My clarkii pair are tank bred and have been with me for about 6 or 7 years, love them.

Very nice pics there--clarkii and nem are the picture of health. I was reading about the lifespan of clowns, you just might have them another 10 or 15 years--they're like parrots. lol.

Thanks alot Gray, both the clowns and the BTA ( before I sold it ) have been with me for a long time, and have been through a couple full tank moves and have always been troopers. And nothing seems to interrupt their spawning. ( the clowns )
