Just wondering if it would be ok to keep a green mantis in my 5 gal tank ?

I have a extra tank and want a mantis. Would the tank be to small ? Would he break the glass ? I really dont want a mess. Its a new tank if that counts.

Some one have an idea ?

He only gets around 4" Would it still be able to break the tank ?

That would all depend on the species of green mantis. If it's a Gonodactylus chiragra, it could damage the tank. Its not common but it could happen. Also I don't think a 5 gallon is big enough for a 4" mantis. I would at least get a 10 and preferably a 15 gallon tank.

I had an M. Wennerae (rip) that was over three inches in a 5 gallon sump without issues. We really need to know more about the species above "green" to give credible advice.

Is that a link to the item you ordered, or is that just a mantis that looks like yours?
The reason i ask is that Item is a grab bag of green mantis and it could be any of many species.
A couple of pictures of your mantis would go a long way to knowing what species you have.

Nope i havent gotten one yet. Thats what i have availible to me. Are the differences in sub spec. that exterame or could you kind of ball them in to one and give advice.

I mean no dissrespect to any one. Just want a general idea. dont have to have Exact details.

Thank's to you all for your comments. I hope to get more!

That grab bag could be an N.wennera which is a cool little bug found from NC south. Or you could be a G.chiagra which is reclusive gets big and could in theory break the tank. Or it could be a plethora of other species.

Check BluezooAquatics, the only way I find their mantis is to search for mantis. They have several species listed and they seem to have mantis more often than other vendors.

I would suggest buying a mantis that you can confirm the species of before the purchase. A N. Wennerae would be fine in a 5 gallon tank and would not be able to break the tank.

you can get an n. wennerae at tampa bay saltwater (website is weird so you have to click "ordering" and then click on "price list" and look under shrimp) there is one odd thing about the pricing but I emailed tbs and i hope to get an answer

hope this helped

Many gonodactylids have a green morph. A few come in lime green. Gonodactylellus viridis from the Indo-Pacific is usually the one that is sold as the "green mantis" - given that viridis means green. Maximum size for G. viridis is about 55 mm, so it would be fine in a 5 gallon. Probably no reason to line it with acrylic.
