griss' Tank Upgrade Thread

2020 6.2L 6 spd manual convertible 2ss. Cars dont have barrels anymore. Leather seats and Bose sound. I drove economy cars and trucks my entire life.
No More

X5 M50i has 100 more HP than the Camaro. 4.4 liter V8 with 2 turbos. Amazing what you can find used if you look. Camaro has 8300 miles. Made no more. Last chance for romance.
Of all the cars I have had, my CTS-V with Tremec 6 spd is the car I miss the most. My new caddi has more bells and whistles, like a backup camera, but I'd trade it for my old V in a heartbeat if I could find the right one, lol. although 30mpg is also nice when you drive 3k / month lol

Thank you. In over 40 years in this hobby, this is my first tank stand with adjustable feet.
I hadn't been getting notifications on your updates! but yeah the adjustable feet... that was a bit tedious and nerve wracking for me.

LOL I have sinned again.

No guns or motorcycles so cars it is. Just a little M2. A pre CAT scan present to myself. Need a bigger garage.

LOL, very nice!

I am not a big gun girl but I do have a youth pump shotgun and a Lady Smith. Other than fish my real love is motorcycles! I only keep 1 at a time though because they are better if they are being used and its too hard to jockey bikes in our narrow garage. Here is my bike. My hubby rides his own but it made for a nice pic!

I've got a bad feeling about this. A year or so from now, I'll be happy to look back and say I was being ridiculous and things turned out fine.

Doing a lot of holiday cleaning this weekend since we’re hosting Turkey Day. But, I’ve got the boy and his friend working on the framing of phase 2.

I I’m close to getting the stand level but, concerned b/c some of the self leveling feet are a bit rusted?

Also, cleaned the inside of the new tank, if you’ve been following, you might remember the overflow was full of tube worm tubes, I poured vinegar into it and it leaked out. Overflow is not water tight, Pro Clear says that’s by design. Anyway, I cleaned the coralline off the overflow and glass and will seal it better.

Just took another look. If I remove the feet, the doors won’t be able to be opened.

I’ve got the thing level using a combo of the leveling feet and 2 shims. But, the back middle leveling foot is not touching the ground. With the stand being against the wall, I guess I have no choice but to use Ned’s suggestion of moving it out, adjusting that foot, moving it back and trying to get it in the same spot or re-leveling it.

Stand is level, resealed the overflow, and fitted eggcrate for the bottom.

I also changed a bunch of switches and outlets in the entry, hall and breakfast area. Mrs griss wanted to get rid of the pewter colored ones and replace with white.

Okay, a friend is suggesting euro bracing this tank before setting it up since it’s rimless to reduce the chances of failure. Thoughts? @ironwill723 I found a year old thread where you were giving advice on how to do so.

I will admit, this is the first rimless I’ve purchased and it does make me a bit nervous.

This is kinda funny. I realized I had put the stand flush against the wall leaving no room to move power cords behind it. The boy and I moved it out 1.5” from the wall and the damn thing is PERFECTLY level without adjustment or shims.

See the garlic and Holy water worked. The recipe is from the movie Lost Boys.

I have never had a rimless tank. I think the euro bracing sounds like a good idea. I know it can cause problems with some equipment because of the lip inside.
DIY Euro-Bracing for Stronger Tanks- The DIY Aquarium

I had to do archeology on this thread to see the tank size. 60x24x26. It would depend on the thickness of the glass I guess. If that was marginal then I would consider bracing it. The braces would need to be professionally cut because they have to fit very good.

It seems Monsterfishkeepers

It seems Custom Aquariums will only build a rimless tank 60 inches long 24 inches high. Non tempered glass 5/8 sides and 1/2 bottom
Custom Dimensions: 24" x 60" x 24" (HxLxD)
Base Price: $2,394.00

Approx Dry Weight: 294 lbs
Approx Full Weight: 1,544 lbs
Approx Total Gallons: 150

Back Panel: 5/8" Regular Clarity Non Tempered
Left Panel: 5/8" Regular Clarity Non Tempered
Right Panel: 5/8" Regular Clarity Non Tempered
Bottom Panel: 1/2" Regular Clarity Non Tempered (.5=13mm rounded up)
choosing tempered did not change the thickness

Gee, not a lot of consensus there. Ya thicker is better but after a point is just adds weight.

Being brave (or stupid depending) I think I would use it as designed. This tank has been used before and is good condition. It should be fine for you as it was before. I would think.
In reality bridges fail when they are too weak when the truck is in the middle. They don't fall down just as the truck reaches the other side like in the movies. The Red Sea tanks started leaking in a short time.

Confession - I have never had a rimless tank. I don't want to see the water level. A esthetic reason. Just like I prefer black silicone for the framing effect.
Not because I think they are inferior or would not trust one.

and the AI opinion
The required glass thickness for an aquarium depends primarily on the tank's height and volume, as water pressure increases with depth. For smaller tanks, 6mm (1/4 inch) glass is typically sufficient for sizes up to 37-56 liters (approximately 10 gallons). Medium-sized tanks, such as those ranging from 113 to 378 liters (approximately 30–100 gallons), generally require 8mm to 12mm (5/16 to 1/2 inch) glass. Larger tanks, especially those exceeding 567 liters (150 gallons), often need 15mm (5/8 inch) or 19mm (3/4 inch) glass for structural integrity.

and rimless

A general rule is to use 1–2 mm thicker glass than the minimum recommended for rimmed tanks to account for the lack of bracing. For very large tanks, such as a 72" x 30" x 30" aquarium, 15 mm (5/8 inch) or even 19 mm (3/4 inch) glass is advised for long-term durability and safety.

I bet that eased you mind.

How to Choose the Right Glass Thickness

The bigger your tank, the thicker your glass should be! Here’s a quick guide based on tank size:

For rimless aquariums (without top bracing), always go 1-2mm thicker for extra strength.
sorry that didn.t paste very good.

@wvned the glass on the tank is 5/8" thick. Pro Clear does have an engineer on staff and, like you said, it is a used tank and in good condition.

I would just use it as it's made. Euro bracing lets you make rimless tanks with thinner glass but you have an area under the bracing thats a pain to clean and wires to wavemakers have to route around it.
Unless VorTechs.

Ah, yes. My old 200 Oceanic (7'x2'x2') had a 2' wide brace in the center and that thing was a salt creep magnet and (even with two 400 watt Radiums and three 250 watt Iwasakis) it was tough to get good lighting under there.
