griss' Tank Upgrade Thread

The last appointment was 45 minutes away near an LFS I haven’t been to in over a decade.

On the way home, stopped there to check it out and came home with a Klein’s Butterflyfish. Acclimating now, will post picks later. This was on my list of butterfly’s I was willing to put in my tank.

I was just looking at an online pearlscale butterfly. I have never kept a butterfly fish but I am thinking about it.

My buddy has had several Klein’s over the years and never had an issue with them picking at corals, which can be an issue with some Butterfly’s.
That is why I am only thinking about it, because I know butterfly's have a reputation of being not reef safe or iffy at best. My tank is not quite big enough for a Klein which was why I was looking at a Pearlscale. The Pearlscale is suppose to be a little easier than some butterfly's to acclimate. They only have a lifespan of 5-7 years though that was also causing me to think hard on this.

I’ve had good luck over the years with Raccoons and Copperbands.
I love both of those but what I saw was that they need over 100g and so I ruled them out. I do have swimming space and hiding places however.
I am really gun shy after my disease event a couple months ago. The worst part of this hobby for me is losing fish and so I try to avoid that at all costs!

I was looking at quarantined online fish at Dr quarantined and saw a pearlscale butterfly there. They also had either a dusky margined fairy wrasse (which is a pretty green) or a pair of Christmas wrasses, ( i like the idea of a male female pair). Its pricey however. That would finish my bigger fish wish list. I could still pick up a bangaii or some chalk bass and maybe finish with a cherub or flameback angel although I hear they can get mean.

I have heard nothing but good things about livestock from @Dr. Reef

Thanks George for your knowledge of Dr Reef. I have not ordered any online fish in over a decade when I had a bad experience with DOAs from Live Aquaria, so I wasn't sure who to purchase from. Finding any of those fish that I was interested in at my lfs could take years.

FWIW - my last order (corals) quite a few years ago from LiveAquaria was not good. They sure went downhill from the Drs Foster & Smith days.

Remember Flying Fish Express?

I also miss Premium Aquatics offering livestock. I’m close enough to them that UPS ground arrived next day. I got my first Acropora from @jasonfrey
Ha ha, actually Dr Foster and Smith; then turned Live Aquaria are the only online vendor I used for fish until I tried KP Aquatics and then Gulf Coast Ecosystem for macroalgae. I do remember the name Premium Aquatics but never used them. Sorry, i don't remember Flying Fish Express. 😅

Well, Premium is still around and is still awesome for dry goods. They were the first online vendor I ever ordered from in 1992.

I’ve never ordered from Gulf Coast Ecosystems because every time I’m ready to order, they’re out of half of the stuff I wanted…need to justify shipping costs😉

Kara and Philipp at KP are awesome and some of my favorite people and one of my favorite vendors.

I totally agree about Kara and Philipp being great. I have never been disappointed with anything I have gotten from KP Aquatics and they are one of my favorite vendors as well.
Yes, I understand about Gulf Coast Ecosystem being out of stock but I just watched them weekly and jumped on something I wanted. I tried new stuff that maybe I wasn't as interested in which helped me learn what macros I could and could t keep. They gave very generous portions. I don't think they are run by the same man now as I heard he retired.
