They last until you get a hole in one or they just dont filter water any more... They can last a very long time. Just keep washing and bleaching and they can last years. I would honestly replace them after a year or so. But thats IMO.

I'm surfing for an informed opinion about the socks vs bioballs. I don't have any idea how to "drill" out the sump to install the socks and get rid of the bioballs. Research, here I come. If you live in northern Pinellas County and have an informed opinion and would be willing to help a fellow reefer out/point me in the right direction, let me know

great, that information helped, Harry.... I have 2, 6 more will keep me for at least a year or two.

Tpaft,
My first sump was a bio-ball system that i converted to sock... You should have a trickle tray that slides out. I cut a hole in that just big enough for a sock head to get into.... Worked fine but it was a workout to change the sock all the time... Honestly, you could probably find one on here pretty cheap.... Good luck.

Faze:
it does have the trickle tray, but would it compromise the integrity of the sump if the covering over the tray was drilled out, too? i tried to google this last night and do some research on other search engines, but to no avail. so i figured i ought to ask questions of other fellow hobbyists on here first before i do any drilling anywhere.

you might be able to do that, i never thought of doing that...

With mine i just let the hose stay connected to the top of the sump and then let the water drop into the sock...

That actually isnt a bad idea to cut all of that un-needed acrylic off... It would be WAY easier to change the socks too!!!!

I dont think you would put anything in jeopardy by doing that...

Just make sure you dont crack the acrylic, or get someone that knows how to cut it. I never did that before.

What micron are they? Also, how wide is the mouth (7")??

-Ryan
They have a 7" opening. I believe they are 25 micron, but I actually didn't ask. The ones I got from John before are 25 micron.
