I am new to this club but i was wondering if COMAS ever does group buys either through trusted online businesses or through local LFS for a discounted price? I browse DFWMAS forums quite frequently and have noticed they do them regularly with great rates. I am needing to stock my 150 that i upgraded to with lots of inverts (crabs, snails...clean-up critters) and didn't know if anyone would be interested in doing a group buy.

Some of the online businesses they have used recently are

*Keys Critters

The one they did in June through Key's Critters consisted of Astrea Snails, Large Ceriths, Small blueleg/cerith, Emerald crabs, Cuke/Serpent Starfish & Sally Light Foots. The prices were very good IMO.

Would anyone be interested in participating in a group buy through Keys Critters for these items?

Has anyone done business with them in the past?

I will contact them to get the current prices of the critters for a group buy if we have some interest from some people.

Price Examples (From DFWMAS June GB)-
Astrea Snails (500 for $160 - .32 each)
Small Cerith snails/Blueleg crabs (500 for $110 - .22 each)
 
Wow those are good deals. Never dealt with any of them, but definately interested in group buys. We need to start stocking our 150 in a few weeks once we move to our new place.
 
interested in the blue legs..id like to get like 250 and split for the other 250...anyone interested?
 
I sent them a message just now letting them know that we were interested and requested the current prices. I will let you know the exact details as soon as i get a response.
 
I won 300 small blueleg crabs from Loyalcrabs on ebay a few weeks ago for $50 bucks, which made per crab at about 16 cents. I don't usually do ebay on things like that, but thought what the heck. Bid 10.00 and won them plus 40.00 shipping.
 
Might I suggest that before you go sending money out of state that you contact local stores and see what they can do for you once you have an idea of what you want.

I think group buys are a great idea and they can bring great prices an individual doesn't normally get. As a club, we have done these before with mixed results. Now, as a rule, COMAS, the organization, doesn't offer group buys, but it's members may organize one among themselves whenever.

However, let me offer you a few things to ponder before you commit yourself to this:
You must select an organizer who can track who has ordered what, set a final order date, and place the order.
You need to keep track of the money and who has paid for what. You need to have someone who will be able to pick up/accept the order when it comes in.
You need to establish a central location and time to pick up orders.
You need to figure out what you will do if someone who orders doesn't pay or doesn't show up at the designated time.
You need to decide how you will collect the money.
If you decide to use paypal, make sure you add the cost of their fees, otherwise the money collecter may end up short.
And finally, what will you and/or the company do about DOA livestock?

This is not meant to scare anyone off. If you plan well, these things can flow easily. I just want everyone to be aware of what is needed.

The prices are up to that amount of livestock for group buys.
example:
400 astrea would be priced at the 500 lot prices showing on the price list.
600 astrea would be priced at the 1000 lot price.

They do ask that group buy be in excess of $300 total.
 
ok iam for at least 250 blue legs...anyone intereseted in splitting with me to get the other 750 moved around...thats 50 bucks for me so far..lol
 
I will contact the LFS once we find out how big of an order we are looking at to see what kind of deal they could make for us. I figure by this weekend we will have a good idea of who all is going to participate and i could ask around locally around that time.
