Group order for Live Rock!

Well, you can have the Skilter if you want it. Actually, had two through the years so may be some extra parts. I'm pretty sure I have a spare pump and maybe a spare impeller too.

I work from home, so any day works unless I end up with work travel, and I usually have at least a few days notice when I need to do that.

Will send you a PM with contact info.

I got most of my rock from here http://www.gulf-view.com/index.html I really liked it not as heavy as Tampa Bay's stuff. I picked it up from the airport in Green Bay saved allot on shipping that way. I think I got like 100 # of sand and 120 # of rock and it cost like $60.00 to ship. Just a thought.

Wow looks like we are going to have a good order of rocks, lets keep researching where to buy from, ive heard of people buying rocks from some place and it was good but the next shipment was not good, so we should contact whoever we choose and find out what there stock looks like good/bad at that time and make decisions off that.

I don't mind wating awhile to order this, but hopefully it could be within the month, not more than a month.

RCS, that would be great if you could house the shipment in your troughs, and then we could pick it up from your house (seems like you would have the largest order and the system to house it all)

Kinda funny I was hoping we could get enough people together to split like a 50 lb box, but looks like it won't be a problem at all.
We should look into the pickup at the airport also if it saves on shiping!
Rock on!

Premium Aquatics gets rave reviews on their rock, and they are located in indiana so shipping would be cheap. I would be up for 5-10 lbs from there. They also order nano sized pieces for those of us who don't want huge rocks. Personally I would prefer as few hitchhikers as possible, no need to deal with aiptasia, flatworms, zoo eating nudibranchs etc if they can be avioded.

yaitisme - I used to run an AGA 10 with an AC70 mini-fuge on it, worked pretty well with cheato and live rock rubble in the AC as long as you keep the bio-load pretty low. Otherwise there will be a lot of water changes. You might also want to throw in a powerhead for more flow.

The last live rock that I picked up from Premium Aquatics had aiptasia, and I know for a fact that aiptasia is alive and growing in their LR holding tanks. That said the live rock was pretty good, and I would expect aiptasia from anywhere.

This is why I am going the grunge & base rock route on my new tank.:)

Well maybe we could split this order, Get a order of base rock and an order of live rock.

RCS, were you going to go ALL live rock on you order or thinkin of going half live and half base? (that would save you a bunch of $)

Id be willing to get some of each, just a thought what do you guys think?

I think we should find someone with a LFS connection... (hint, hint) :D

Since live rock is one of the biggest money makers with the highest profit margin...

And since it looks like we will be needing almost 500 pounds...

I am sure there is a LFS that would be more than happy to help a reef club out and give us all a great price - especially with the amount we are looking for.

Any ideas? :D

I've got 100 lbs of base rock sitting in the garage already, not to mention about 200 lbs of live rock in various vats... ;)

This is the place you guys just ordered from and it seemed to work out and they fixed the death problems, and its only 3.50 a pound! We should see if we could get a pic of the rock they have right now, not some fancy piece they chose for the "show" pic.

Quote from web page: "If you’re interested in buying over 100 pounds of rock, we would suggest you consider using airfreight for your shipping method. Shipping charges will be much cheaper, around $.75 a pound, but you’ll need to go to the cargo section of your nearest major airport to pick up the shipment."

Thats 4.25 a lb shipped, not bad. Anybody else have ideas? or found out anything?

btw they have base rock also

Thats some nice looking rock. I had always heard that Caribean rock was more dense and heavier than Fiji or Tongan rock but according to their website "The rock we use is an extremely porous type of limestone called "Miami Oolite", which is very high in aragonite and is relatively light and full of big holes."

I have only bought rock from 2 places over the years, Live Aquaria and Marine Depot Live. It has all been Fiji rock. I really liked the shapes of the rock I received but was less than happy with the growth (lack of) on it, but really that is not the purpose of live rock to begin with.

If we put in a large order I would be interested in some just to see the difference.

Just spoke with Capt. Jer at reeferrocks. Due to all the hurricanes and storms they don't have the live rock available. I have a feeling we'll hear the same from anyone out of Florida, or discover it the hard way later.

Anyway, while it looks like most of the group order would be for live rock, if we split it and order base rock as well my vote is for reeferrocks for the base rock. I've been very pleased with what I received before.

But, I need such a small amount of either I'll go with wherever the group goes. LOL, my tiny bit still needed will amount to some rubble with the weights ya'll are up to.

I guess, for me, I would rather pay the extra $1.50/lb for live rock than base rock...

Since I will need approx 120-150 pounds, the little extra money would be very worth it...

Isn't there a LFS that would sell us 500+ pounds of live rock for $3.00 a pound?

What they lose in a per pound price, they would MORE than make up in the 500+ pounds...

I found 44 pound boxes of Walt Smith Fiji rock for 160 including 2nd day shipping, that comes to $3.64 a pound. If you want it shipped overnight it is $172 a box ($3.90 a pound).

That's ironic, I was just thinking Walt Smith on the way home from work just now...

Marineone... I realize your affiliations.... however, I would offer that perhaps those retailers could piggy back and help "enlarge" the group order, there by passing better prices on or batter products to their clientel.

Just a though.

Read a bunch of posts about Jeff's.
Seems like corals are good, fish are hit and miss.
One post said great live rock for cheap.
Could not find any bad posts about LR from him, but I only read like 3 pages.
I would call to find out shipping charge before ordering though, they are on west coast so the shipping may be more.

I did call, that's where I got the .75/lb from...

:D

One step ahead of me I see!

Is that shipped so you have to pick it up at an airport or is that delivered right to your door?
