Group order for Live Rock!

I emailed reefscience.com and this is what I got in return, Promptly im may add.

"Hi Brian, it's 6.75/lb in quantites less that 100 lbs and 6.25/lb in
quanties greater than 100 lbs plus shipping. Shipping via FedEx will
be 94.00 PER 50 lb box to your doorstep. We can ship to your local
airport to save via Southwest(if your local airport does Southwest)
and that rate will depend on what Southwest charges to your local
airpot. There are several reviews and photos on RC that highlight our
rock that customers have actually received...

Hope this helps,
Chad D. Bryant"

I had asked for pics and also told him we were a reef club on RC, he is also a member on RC, he goes by smariner.
So at $2/lb shipping that brings the rock up to over $8/lb, out of the question for me for now, nice looking rock though.

Jeffs Exotic Pets
I checked out the history of the vendor experience and had to go back months, and still never found any bad word about Jeffs, just one person that said he had no contact with them, couldn't get ahold of them and didn't get an answer.

We should see if we can get some pics of the stuff thats on sale, and see why its on sale.

I would be willing to go 1/5 on a 50lb box, just to check it out and if it was good then you guys/gals could go with the large order.

99.50 for the rock, if the shipping is correct it would be 37.50, making the total 137, split that 5 ways and its $27.40, not bad for 10 lbs of rock shipped. If its a bad deal then each of us is only out a little. At that price I would only be able to get 4-5 lbs at the LFS
Just a thought.......do I have 4 tag-a-long-ers?

Limpit, where did you find that Walt Smith Rock?

Jeff emailed me back...

"The cheapest way to ship is by doing it to your nearest major airport. On average its $0.75/lb with a 100 lb minimum. There is also a $25 airport drop off fee per shipment. If you have any other questions, feel free to email again or to call me at toll free 888-442-3474.

Jeff"

So it would be a little more expensive than first projected but still a good deal.

Bri

Jeff's is fine with me. I can split the 'sample' shipment with you and others. I need about 12-15 and a little rubble.

Thanks for the leg work.

Airport :D

BTW, where are you reading reviews about them?

I just typed "Jeffs Exotic" into the search.

I don't know where your going to order from but I asked Ken from sealifeflorida.com if the hurricane did anything and if he could still collect rock and this was his reply.

Kathy,
we have plenty of rock. Ernesto turned out to be a dud and didn'
cause any problems. Many of the live rock growers in the Keys were wiped out last year by the hurricanes and are probably still trying to recover. We had damage, but never missed a week of production and have had plenty of rock available all along.
Our site is the oldest one on the East Coast and has been through 10 hurricanes in the last 12 years, but we've never missed a week of shipping because of storm damage. The site is 3 miles offshore, but tucked in a deep trough behind a shallow reef bank, so most of the waves are broken up before they hit the site. Ken

Just in case you did want to order from him.

Well, after getting input from everbody it seems like some want cheap rock and the others want premium rock. I want both, so it seems like two orders are in order.

Id like about 10 lbs of frag pieces from http://www.reeferrocks.com/

And around 10 lbs (or less depending on size of rock) of premium rock (shock full of goodies) from an undecided place yet. (where were you thinking jason?)

Checking my budget, it looks like my pay check on the 22th will be the order date (unless sombody would like me to wait untill the 29th id wait till then but no later)

Marine one and RCS, what timing were you looking into to buy your rock. Cause if this is too early you could start another order down the road, you have enough to make it a large order in yourselfs.

So you have 2weeks and 2 days to get your order together, and let me know, cheap filler rock from reefer rock or nice premium rock and how much

It seems like most places don't give group order discounts, just discounts when you order over 100lbs of rock.

http://www.reeferrocks.com/

Looks like that's out of the question.

Wow, that's not good news but hopefully someone else will take it over from them. Can't blame the guy having back troubles and all. I'm sure lugging rock all day long can take it's toll after a while.

Have we decided on a place for the LR though?

No we haven't chosen a place yet but we have chose a grade. We are going to buy some very nice (not cheap but nice) rock, Most of my tank is base rock and cooked rock from my old tank and I would like to seed it with some crazy cool rock. If your looking to give your tank a Kick or a BAM get in on this order.

I was doing my research and narrowed it down to three (unless somebody found a differant site let us know)

1. http://www.reefscience.com/

The owner is a member of reef central (smariner) Chad D. Bryant

The rock is 6.75 under 100lbs and 6.25 over, I forgot to ask how much the polyp rock was, but thats an option too. And shipping to our door was $94/ 50lbs (right around $2/lb) we could get it cheaper by picking it up at the airport

2. http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/

I didn't get a quote on how much shipping would be here but over all its running around $2/ lb where ever I check. So there Coral Rock is $6/lb and the regular premium rock is $5/ lb. Nothing but raves about this place, great rock.

3. http://www.livestockusa.org/

This is the site I have heard the least about , but no bad reviews, they are also the only ones that make our order out of the states, close to its picking site. Again shipping would probably run around $2/lb.
Pricing is at the bottom of this...http://www.livestockusa.org/ROCK.html

I liked the very first one (or the second if we can get together more than one box) $3.10/lb and we can customise our box!

Heres one comparison, you can skip alot of the reading just keep an eye out for what they say about this place.... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=889579

What do you say? Any new site ideas? Vote today! Or soon, take five minutes and see what you can find for a reliable place with nice rock.

the order would be put in on 9-22, or 9-29, depending on if everybody can get there money together by then. (should be good shipping weather then also) shipping would be the next mon-wed? not sure yet we will have to chose a place and give them our order (or an example) to get the details.

I know that these compare with LFS prices, but frankly the last couple of times Ive looked at rock in the stores, Im less than impressed, the only hitch hikers they carry are aitpasia. Im willing to spend a couple of bucks to get something nice!

Brian, I've been following along, and would really like to get in on this. I think it would be a great idea. Especially with winter comming, NOW is the time to order. November will be to late. I think alot of beople will agree that to add a bit of diversity would be a great thing in every tank, but I also think that none of us really has enough jing to stick out 600$ on the line to test a site. I personally don't want to stick 100$ on the line for a place I've never been. I propose the following...

I like some of the places you've suggested, but a big box and the 12 people needed to split it is out of the question... lets consider frequenting ken's site again. He seemed nice, sells by the pound, so we can accomadate any size order. It's rock, I don't think we have to ship next day, 2 day should be fine with the cooler temps... and it starts at 3.50 + ~1.25 for shipping... about 4.75 delivered... check out the rock...

http://sealifeflorida.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=31

of course this means I have to get me arse moving on that nano I've never wanted to build... yeah right...

What do you think???

(in Scooter Fashion, a Reply to my own message :D)

I bet we could order say, ~13 bounds for person a and he'd bag it that way, make for easy dist. when received. We could contact him. Proly get a couple candles going and we could get out the oija board, and communicate with him ourselves, not to trouble kass with that.

Jason

Ya, I like the fact that you guys just ordered from there and it went good, they seemed to have good cusomer service, and the price is right.
We can order however many pounds we would like, so that would make the order easier that having to split a box.

My vote goes for sea life flordia too!

Haha Jason. It doesnt matter to me what you do. I bet he LOVES all the emails he gets from me lmao.

He's a good guy. I never ordered rock from him but I'm guessing it's alot like tampa bay saltwater.

I ordered all my rock from TBS and was amazed at what i got. I picked it up directly at the airport. As for mantis', there were plenty... but nothing a high salinity dip didnt fix. ALong with the mantis i got plenty of different beneficial creatures for my tank. I wouldnt go anywhere else but TBS for rock.

Hey, there's a name from the archives....! Welcome back.

You puttin in...? Those with money on the table, drive the bus.

All others seem to be de-railing this attempt.... the thread seems to be fizzeling. If you want in, speak up, and you can change the place, but otherwise, Brian and I talked and we are worried that there are alot of people who have opinions about where to spend the money, but no money to spend (at least now). That's why I posted what I did in my last 2 posts. I have no problem going to TBS but right now it's only Bri and I.

"Join me, and together we shall rule the galaxy as father and son... " oh wait... sorry. Join us, better yet. LEAD US - we need a LEADER.

Welcome back Stig.

Jason

I liked what I read in the description...

"This is our choicest aquacultured live rock. Aquacultured live rock is one of our specialties. We have the oldest offshore live rock aquaculture site in The Florida Keys, and its unique location results in some spectacular live rock. We hand select every rock that goes in the water, and leave them on the bottom for at least two years until they are ready to be harvested. By our standard, the rock is not ready until it has at least 75% coverage by some sort of coralline algae or other durable, reef friendly, encrusting invertebrate."

I was just offering advice from my personal experience. I dont need any live rock at this, and actually have some sitting in a tank in the basement with nothing else in it.
