Grouper's 225 build- the beginning

I'm really diggin' this sketchup program.

About time! Darn now I have to take my 210 back and get a 230.

Can' t wait to see the tank up and running. Let me know if you need a hand with anything.

I see you want to integrate the canopy/lift mechanism with the stand. Just to throw it out there, here's an alternative: Link

All the mechanics could be enclosed. Would look real "modern", if you like that sort of thing.

John will tell you the rock and anem tanks are underbuilt.Paul has good pics in his build thread and I know what 80-20 parts he used and how it is hooked up,so I can help you out as well.

Thanks Chris. I went through Paul's thread and found the links for the linears and stuff. Looks perfect. But that motor is LOUD in the video. But it's not like I'll be using it everyday. Unless, I set up a controller/timer system to move the canopy in increments during the day. OOOooohhhh.

Tom, thanks for the link. What a build. I wish I had the room and an understanding wife like that.

Modern? Did I strike you as a metrosexual kinda guy? LOL

The only Metro I know leaves the station every hour on the hour ... ;)

What kind of flow will be going through the sump? If you are doing DSB or fuge it could be too much.

I'm doing something similar as you this currently what I"m thinking of doing.

From left to right compartments:

#1 Filter sock for drain from left hand side of tank
#2 Fuge/Live rock/DSB/Chaeto (haven't decided which yet)
#3 Filter sock drain from right had side of tank
#4 skimmer
#5 bubble trap/ATO/return pump

The reason for splitting up the filter socks into two compartments instead of one is I cut the flow in half going through the Fuge/Live rock/DSB/Chaeto area. Also I only have the room to have the return pump on the right hand side of sump (can't plumb it from the middle).

I'm sorry, I had to LOL at this one.

*waves hand* yes!

Nice tank concept, like it so far!

I know you want a DSB, but you won't have much flow thru your sump. An alternative that I'm doing on my frag setup is a drain which splits flow out in half, half going thru another tank (Fuge/dsb) and the other half going straight to the sump.

Need advice, suggestions on my newest drawing.

After talking with some rather smart fellows, I changed to a coast to coast overflow. I didn't drw them in, but there will be vertical braces in the overflow area to prevent bowing.

The 4 holes in line with the overflow slots are where the returns will be.

I rike coast to coast..........you gonna do the beananimal drain system? I'd suggest it based on what I've read here.

I found it. That is pretty cool. I wonder if I can do that within the overflow box??

You can do the BASAFOS with the external overflow. See GlassReef's build thread in the large tank forum.

As for the sump, I'm not a fan of skimming before or after the refugium, whether the refugium has algae or rock. The reason is that if the skimmer is before the fuge, it takes all the nutrients that would feed the pods or algae. If the skimmer is after the fuge, then lots of pods get skimmed. I prefer the return pump in the center with the skimmer on one end and the fuge in the middle, with 1/3 or less of the flow going to the fuge and 2/3 or more of the flow going to the skimmer. Fuge gets fed, and pods get sent to the display for the benefit of the livestock there.

I always wonder how many pods actually make it to the display vs how many get churned up in the return pump.

Mike, if I'm understanding, your talking about drains going to each end of the sump with the return in the middle?

Chris, I will get the material next week. Should of had it this week but the supplier cut up my material for another project that was supposed to be regular plexiglass. They had to order in some new material for me.

I really want to get the tank built before I start the stand in case I can squeeze another .5 inch or so out of the material.:D

Mark,
Lookin really good...You know you are going to have throw a party when the build is done.:celeb2: :celeb3: :celeb1:
