FLATWORMS!

Several month back I did my tank all over again. New sand, cooked/boiled/dead rock. All new corals and fish.. because of flat worms..

Things were going good and I spent a lot of money on new equipment and all sorts of fun stuff. Things were going well until yesterday.. I added my first acro ever in an attempt to go all SPS.. well, this morning I noticed a flat worm crawling on my glass.. I looked at the sand line and noticed a few little one's also.. I looked closely at the acro and saw flat worms and what I think might be red bugs...Nope I didn't quarantine..

I can't be mad at anyone but myself for failure to quarantine..

So, bye bye to 250lbs of southdown sand
bye bye to all my corals.. acro, bubble coral, candy cane, mushrooms, zoo's..
300lbs of premium rock...
snails
shrimp
cleaner clams
hermits

I am debating on setting up another tank. i might just sell it all. Im so bummed!

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried Flatworm exit? I would try something before tossing everything. What if you did a freshwater dip and made a QT to put everything in after you do a fresh water dip? I hate to see everything get tossed :(

Don't trash it - just use Flatworm exit if they are the common flatworms (the brown or red ones that are on the glass, not the near-invisible acro eating flatworms), and use Interceptor for the red bugs. I have done both in the past, no problems.

Six line wrasse will keep the common flatworms under control. It's only when they overpopulate when you have trouble. If you want total erradication, flat worm exit works well.
If its the acro eating flat worms, your f--ked. Do you see any bite marks on the frag? Ask the person you got the frag from if he seen bit marks on the colonies. there are all types of flatworms, and seeing it on the glass might indicate its a harmless one even though its a colorless one as long as you control there numbers.

You've learned a vauable lesson at the best possible time, your actually lucky don't sweat it. I would:

Dip your frags in TMPCC just to be sure, then Flat work exit the tank. One week later interceptor the tank. Leave the tank acro free for 6 weeks to make sure all AEFW and RB are gone. I now triple dip everything and actually just set up a QT/frag tank. Heck I even dip in tmpcc when going from frag tank to display.

P.S. I fully expected to see a pic of that red monti! :)

PM me if you need more details, I'll give you my number and we can dicuss it.

When you stopped by to see my tank and get a barrel, I explained to you how to get rid of them. That was like 6 months ago. I helped a LFS get rid of his. He tried it his way and it didn't work. I don't know why people ask for help and don't listen to what is suggested. It's not like I don't try things out first. I spend a lot of time testing things on corals and fish. I never suggest anything I haven't used or tried.

You don't have to get rid of anything. Just treat your tank. Good luck

I actually had a bout with them before and tried all the remedies before with no success, that's why I purchased all new stuff and new sand and started all over again. I think I must have used about 5 bottles of flat worm exit and I can only guess how much carbon I had to buy just for those little bastards to come back. This time before spending money on the bandaid I will just start all over. It's my fault, lesson learned this time.. I swear I was almost sick when I saw them. So, this is my plan..

Get rid of all the sand.. remove my fish, coral and inverts and treat the tank and rock with a bare bottom.. throw out my cheato since it was dying anyway and after 2 months or so try again with new sand.. New inverts and new quarantined coral..

How do u have overpopulation?

I've had them 3 times and they just keep vanishing. Maybe my cleaner shrimp like them???
else its snails, clownfish, sleeper goby and a royal gramma.
Maybe the CBS?? I never have a huge amount very long

Only saw a few but I have a percula clown and 2 coral banded shrimp and 9 peppermint shrimp. I think I'm calming down a bit and gonna actually try flatworm exit again. I actually have a new bottle in my cabinet. I just need to get carbon.

Now I will wait to add the carbon.. Didn't see many flatworms or any flatworm webs..

I see the damsel ate a few floating one's but there weren't that many..

PM me if you want. I'll come down this w/e and work with you. I have a ton of FWX (part of my QT process), so I'll bring it with me. You buy as much as we use, no other costs to you. We'll get them. I have other things we can do too. I'm getting a little bored, this reef and fragging stuff is getting too easy. I like a challenge ... It's in your court.
