Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

did my tests today after ghost feeding some flakes.

all levels are the same.

temp 80
ph 8.2
ammonia 0
nitrite .5
nitrate 40 (havent done water change yet)

Am I good to do a 50% water change and add my clowns (2) and gramma?
Ill be dosing with prazi for 2 weeks. No copper unless I see ich. 4 week stay in the qt hotel
 
if u fed the tank today wait 24 hrs before testing.
if results come back same after 24 hrs then ammonia is 0 but nitrites are still 0.5 so i would wait till it hits 0. then do water change and u will be good to go.
Prazipro for 2 weeks is fine then observe over 4-6 weeks.

Its been a while since i've posted, but i've been busy getting my new 240g in wall done and it finally is. Now i am using the 75g tank i had setup to hold everything while i get the new tank ready as a quarantine. One nice thing about this now is that the 75g is mature and cycled so no worries about ammonia or anything like that.

So over the past 10 days or so I have purchased 4 fish which are all in the 75g QT now. Its a powder blue, a Naso tang, a file fish and a Flame angel. All are doing extremely well and eating great. Yesterday night i started Prazipro. So how long do you recommend I do the prazi treatment and then how long after that do i observe the fish?

i am glad to hear all the great progress and very pleased to know that new setup/qt and fish are all doing fine.
For now after dosing prazipro you will need to wait 1 week then do a 25-50% water change then re-dose prazipro for another week.
After second treatment do another water change and then just observe over 4-6 weeks. so a total of 6-8 weeks from purchase. in the last week of qt start measuring parameters like salinity temp pH and match qt as close to Dt as possible. Then transfer.

For transfer:
match parameter from dt as close as possible in Qt, net them out and move them to a bucket of water from DT, then using a separate net get them out of bucket to DT.

This thread rocks, so many different viewpoints on QT and one great thread to debunk the myths.

I've got a permanent QT, I even run a makeshift skimmer when I have a resident.

Finished 1st week of Prazipro an noticed white spots on one of my tangs and that one has also been scratching on rocks. Did a 40% water change and now starting hypo. Started my carbon and skimmer up as well. I can run those during hypo right? Do you have link handi on hypo treatment?

i am glad you found the problem in qt rather than in dt. Skimmer and carbon can be run in hypo but i never do. i see no harm in running them. Yes i do have a step by step guide for hypo. only thing i strongly recommend is that have the refractometer calibrated with a 35ppt solution and hold the salinity at 1.009 dead on.

I am happy to report the female clown has been doing much better and both are eating well. I started my salinity climb yesterday and plan to finish it next Sunday (little each day) and into the DT they finally go.

In preparation for my next fish to go into QT... I am thinking of a yellow tang. I remember reading that tangs are either highly likely or susceptible or something to ich. I also think I recall reading that they should all be put in copper.

Is this true? Or does it still hold true? Can you do hypo-salinity on a yellow tang without issues? I much rather do that than use copper.

Any advice would be great bnumair!! :)

i am so happy to see everything went fine with your clown fish, if i remember correctly you did hypo with the pair right? if so then please make sure that you leave fish in hypo 2 weeks after last ich falls off and unseen ich in gills is gone, (breathing will return normal) once that stage is achieved then ur 2 weeks clock starts and after those 2 weeks u can start increasing salinity.
Yes tangs are known carriers and i always do hypo on all tangs no matter if they show sign or not. Again the rules of hypo are the same as u have already done so.

The clowns didn't have ich... I just did hypo as a preventative measure. They were at 1.009 for 3 weeks. And the previous 3 weeks they were in prazi as a preventative. Now I am spending the next week taking the salinity up and then they will go in the DT.

Yellow tang will get 1 week to adjust, then drop salinity over 2 days and he will stay in there with prazio pro for 3 weeks... then a week to bring salinity up. That sound ok?

sorry for the confusion, i get so many pm's and emails and questions here i forget sometimes what was going on with what tank and which person, lol
anyways yes u did the right thing with the clowns.
with YT i would suggest first week to adjust with prazipro then water change with lower salinity, so u have 2 birds with 1 stone. Next 48 hrs drop salinity to 1.009. Hold that for 4 weeks instead of 3, then bring the salinity up over next 1 week then please observe for another 2 weeks before placing in DT. this species is a known carrier beware.

Bnumair,
What would be the best way to raise the PH in the RO water before adding it to the tank so i wont have any problems with PH and hypo treatment? Can i just add baking soda to the RO water?

Hi Tassod
dont use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) will bring the pH down u need to use soda ash (sodium carbonate) to bring the pH up but both have temp effect on pH and effect goes away after few hours.
