Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

how low is pH? if its within 7.8-8.4 range i wouldnt do anything, other ways to increase pH is using an airstone, low pH is due to co2 buildup.

I tested it after your reply using my apex probe as I don't have PH test kit and it read 8.38 so I guess it's fine for now. I'm at 1.013 SG tonight and started this morning from 1.023. I'll be at 1.009 tommorrow. Got a Tunze ATO so should be no problem keeping it there. Fish are fine although powder blue is swimming a bit erratic but everyone still eating good.

thats good. i dont have that issue as here in Tulsa, Oklahoma city water out of tap and processed through the ro/di unit is still 8.1 pH.
But in some other cities or tanks if pH is low or runs lower please use airstone or soda ash or kalk(mrs wages pickle powder) also placing a fan to run across the sump or tank can cause co2 exchange better. Airing up the room, opening the window etc all there things will increase pH.

Well today is day 4 of hypo. Flame angel, Filefish are doing fine. Naso tang is ok but is picky on food..only wants frozen. Blue hippo tang was eating..but this morning he wouldn't and he clearly has ich all over. Powder blue still acting a bit funny...does not swim around as much anymore, just likes to stay mostly in a certain spot..he eats but not with the same appetite. He was scratching a lot early going but not as much anymore just seems a bit lethargic. How long does it take for ich to just die and fall off in hypo? Should i start running Prazi pro also?

Symptoms you described mean ich is in the gills of the fish which will cause irritation and make fish not active and causing them to stop eating. Keep the salinity at 1.009 and try different foods mix with garlic to open their appetite. Hypo should start giving relief very soon.
Prazipro can be dosed at anytime.
Good luck.

I am setting up a QT that I am going to need Tuesday. I just picked up a 20L, AquaClear 70, Heater, Koralia Nano 425 powerhead, and an assortment of 3", 2", and 1.5" PVC Ts and Elbows.

I am going to be putting the AC70 on my sump to run until tuesday. Can someone answer what I should leave in there? It come with "AquaClear Foam, Activated Carbon and BioMax". I am assuming I should keep the Foam and the BioMax pellets for bacteria growth?

Also, I will be doing my weekly water change on my DT in a few hours. Should I put the water I am taking out of it in the QT tank?

Edit: I actually can't find a good place for the AC70 on my sump (it is a bit larger than I had envisioned) and I would rather not set it on my DT. Can I just put the sponge and Biomax pellets in the baffles of my sump?

Hi EllisJuan
I am glad to hear you are setting up a qt tank. Yes if AC 70 is bigger and cant be fitted on the sump then just place the biomax media and sponge in the sump and let it seed of your existing sump. Do not use carbon as it will defeat the purpose of dosing any meds if you do any.

Long story short. I have a 10g QT that kept and released a Midas Blenny with no issues tank wise. I am getting it ready for my second fish. I was reading on here about keeping your bacteria alive in an empty QT, so 2 days ago I added a bit of food to the tank. Yesterday I woke up to the tank with milky water. Today is even worse even after adding carbon overnight. What happened?

10g tank
AQ filter with sponge and bio rings ( and carbon now)
Power head with aeration.
Kick started with bio spira in the beginning.

All tests were in order.
Temp is 80.

Just thought i would post an update on my fish in QT, they are doing great and have been in hypo since 4/28. None of them show any signs of ich and initially my powder blue and hippo tang did have it but they are now doing great. They are all eating and swimming great. I'm thinking by the first week of June i will start raising the salinity to back to normal.

It's most likely a bacterial bloom. Quiet common in qt tanks specially if Prazipro was used in the tank. It should pass in few days. Few water changes will help as well along with carbon.

I am glad to hear that things are are going well for you. I was reading your other post about acclimation of new fish to u hypo tank. It's best to do drip acclimation or as u had buckets ready I would take some water out and replace with ro/di water till u reach the hypo salinity. It's best not to use transport water at all. Longer the transport water remains in baskets it can get toxic. Best if u net fish out from bags and place them into buckets with say 1.023 saltwater and then over time replace with ro/di water.

Yup. Prazi was used. I'm about to do a water change as well. I am not sure if the food kicked this off, but I'm glad I fed the tank empty. It would have sucked to have this happen right after adding a fish.

Back in stand by mode.
Thank you.

that bacterial bloom will not hurt the fish if there was any in the tank. and trust me it will happen again with prazipro. its very common.
Anyways water changes and use of carbon will help but if left alone it wont hurt any livestock and will go away over time in few days to a week.

Thanks for taking the time to also comment on my other thread. Both fish are in the tank now and are fine. The only issue I'm kinda having now is that my powder blue is not really liking the 2 new arrivals, especially the purple tang. Initially he just kept going after him real aggressively which i was surprised because the purple tang is bigger than him. So i took some egg crate to separate him for the night. This morning i let him free again and he seems to be better now but there is still the occasional aggression. Could it become a problem or should i just let them be?

On another note, do i really need to reset the clock on my hypo treatment now that i added these 2 new fish even though they show no signs of ick?

its best you keep them separated in qt with help of egg crate. qt is a small tank with little space and aggression will occur. in main tank there is more space and lots of rocks and caves to hide, so in bigger tank there may not be aggression as bad. also the powder blue has dominance as it has established the qt as its home and done want intruders.
Clock has to go back to day 1 no exceptions.

Good to know. Still would have freaked me out though. :)

I noticed tonight that my Flame Angel looks like he has pop-eye. How is that treated? I read that an antibiotic sometimes is needed. Only thing i have that i could possibly use is Cipro which i have on hand for my anemones.

tetracycline, chloramphenicol or kanamycin are all antibiotics and will help in healing a pop eye. Cipro is also an antibiotic which will help as well.

Will using Cipro affect anything as far as my biological filter?

Will it affect the other fish if they are not in need of it?

How much would i dose? I have 250mg tablets (this is the stuff perscribed to humans) and its a 75g tank. With my anemones, i would dose 250mg per 10gallons of water.

hi Tassod,
it is 250mg per 10 gal for 5 days. it will not hurt anything else in the system but after 5 days do a water change 50% and then few days later another 50%. keep lights off during the 5 day treatment as it will break the med down.
