Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

Generally yes, just make sure to have PVC hiding spots.

If using copper don't have sand, but for other QT options you can use Tupperware dishes with sand in it for ease of taking out and replacing.

generally yes,if yougo have to use sand and medication at the same time then use pure silica sand in a 2" tupperware. Pure silica does not absorb copper.

So I'm currently filling a 31 gallon (30"x12"x20") QT tank with RO/DI water, I have a heater, powerhead, HOB AquaClear 50 filter with double biomax instead of carbon, bare bottom, just a few pvc pipe pieces going to go in for hide places. I plan to do the frozen shrimp in a panty hose to get cycling, do i need to add my salt mix off the bat and maintain proper salinity levels through the cycle or can i just add the salt before the first fish goes in? does my filtration sound up to par? i kinda wish i would have got the next size up but then again this tank will only house 2 small ocellaris at first, then after they are out one small to medium size fish at a time. Thanks all

you have to maintain salinity along with all other saltwater parameters, otherwise you will not be able to cycle the tank.

I believe he mentioned about half way thru this thread to leave the shrimp or w/e Your using in till ammonia reaches 1.0ppm

yes that is true, few days ammonia should be atleast 1-1.5ppm. then pull the food out.

Sorry if that was a kinda dumb question. Wasn't sure if it was the same bacteria that cycled freshwater

there is no dumb questions, :)
freshwater bacteria and saltwater bacteria is totally different and they dont mix or live in others environment.

Wanting to start up a QT at the same time I start my DT. My plan was to have some fish in QT while my DT was cycling. But technically my QT won't be cycled. I was planning on going bare with pvc for hiding, lid, and pump for water circulation. I originally planned on doing a small HOB or sponge filter but I started thinking- how would the sponge filter do with adding medicine to the tank? wouldn't it absorb some? So someone suggested no filtration, just water changes (not sure how often) and a pump to circulate the water.

But if that's how I do things- how can the tank cycle..? I know I need to worry about my QT cycling but I've seen a lot of people just adding a shrimp and adding a fish a few days after...? Basically- can I starting QTing my fish so by the time my DT is done cycling I can add a thoroughly QT'd fish.

Thanks!

I have a question regarding fish from liveaquaria's diver's den.
I just purchased a trio of lyretail anthias that will be here on Wednesday.

I have a 20g tank that has been running for a few months now that I have been ghost feeding.

I plan on putting all 3 anthias in my 20g long for a few weeks to ensure they're eating and no disease. I know that diver's den is supposed to QT, but just to be safe and ensure no issues I plan on a minimum of 3 weeks.

Does this sound good? any recommendations as far as treating them for precautionary?

Thanks for your help as always!

Hi
Yes DD fish are qt'ed, so 4 weeks in your own qt would be safe to say. I would only treat with prazipro. Unless some other disease is diagnosed.
Good luck and safe reefing.

Hi
I would replace everything from hob and buy some ceramic media and place it in the hang on the back filter. ceramic media does not absorb copper and will not trapped debris like sponge which causes nitrates, so that would be your best option. I would place a frozen deli shrimp in the HOB. Let cycle begin and complete before placing any fish in the tank.
Good luck and safe reefing.

( see pic below)
This is my first ammonia test about 28 hours after starting cycle in QT tank, no way it's time to already take the crawfish out right?

Here's the second test, taken 10 minutes after 1st test.

Edit: however just saw I'm trying to build ammonia, so obviously the crawfish needs to stay.

Yes crawfish stays probably another day or two. Ammonia level of 1 to 1.5 ppm is what I generally shoot for.
