Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

So would u say if i add this tonight should it be ok to add a fish to my QT on thursday if everything reads zero tomorrow?

If ammonia and nitrite are 0 by that time then and only then. But it all depends on your system, filtration, surface area and population of bacteria etc.

So my quarantine tank is now reading ammonia < 0.25 and nitrite 11ppb. My frag tank that i am cycling shows <0.25 and nitrite 200ppb. I have no plans on putting anything in it now and I realize my frag tank is not ready. My question is when should I start ghost feeding, and should I do a water change prior to placing any fish or coral in the above? Thanks

bnumair, so you dont treat fish proactively with cupramine right? only if they exhibit symptoms? Plan on getting 2 clowns (ocellaris or percs) wasnt sure if i should only do a proactive prazipro treatment or just go ahead and do both.

Hi
yes looks like both tanks are in middle of cycle. i would let them ride for now till ammonia and nitrites hit 0. after that do few water changes and you will be good to add livestock.

Correct, i treat all fish with prazipro then observe.
I do proactively treat all tangs with hypo or copper as they are known to be ich magnets.

Good to know. My girlfriend really wants to get a blue hippo down the road, I know they are notorious for ich. What determines if you use hypo salinity or copper? (I already have some cupramine on hand)

copper is more effective than hypo, but some fish are highly sensitive to copper. certain wrasses and angels for instance. so if you weren't planning to do tank transfer method, then hypo would be the next-best alternative to proactively treat for Ich.

My planned list of fish were along the lines of ocellaris clowns, blue hippo tang, Banggai cardinals, diamond watchman goby, midas blenny and coral beauty.

Would copper be hard on any of these fish besides possibly the coral beauty?

my only death from cupramine was a coral beauty. got HLLE pretty quickly and didn't recover. i have not heard of the others you listed having trouble... but I am no expert in the copper world -- i stopped using it after just a couple QT-periods; started TTM at that point.

Cupramine is a very safe form of copper and has been tried with angels. Search on this topic here on RC.
I don't see a problem with your list of fish with copper.

So my ammonia is at 1.0 on the 3rd day of the cycle, I'm going out of town tomorrow till Sunday so will probably take the crawfish out tonight. Do I need to do a water change before I go?

EDIT: Saw in a previous comment that you don't do a water change until it cycles so got my answer

I put some white PVC pipe in yesterday, I did wash it before I put it in but it seems to have clouded my water up some, guessing that's normal?

it could be bacterial bloom which also will settle in few days. so no worries.

So apparently the qt is going to be in the front room where people can see it instead of in the back. So far I had just got a couple pieces of 2inch PVC for the fish. Now the gf is wondering if we can get a couple pieces of decor for inside to make it look a bit nicer, like a fake anem. fake piece of coral..etc. Any potential prob with this? Still will be bare bottom no rock or sand. Thanks for your time.

It's best not to place ornaments in qt. Few reasons being most ornaments are made for freshwater tanks and can leech stuff in saltwater overtime. Also ornaments can absorb medicine making dosing and keeping right strength a nightmare.
So I advise against it or at least pull them out if medicine is used and also make sure ornaments are made for saltwater application.

Thanks, and sorry if you have answered that question before in this thread. It was silicone, I thought maybe this material would be ok.
More specifically it is this

if its 100% silicone it should be fine. i couldnt find more info on the material by doing a quick google search.

Ok so i added the recomended dose of the api quick start. Added ceramic media. Removed the old sponges since i read up that they hold nitrites. And still nothing! Nitrites still showing off the roof. What should i do? A big water change?

no just wait a few days and see what happens if they still there then do few water changes.
