Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

Ok so the only thing i have local is a petsmart and they dont have any bio spira. They sell instant ocean products but dont see ny bacteria boosters. Any alternatives?

Try local fish stores or sometimes farm/pond supply places or order online.

So is it no necessary to clean the QT after each use?

no, i dont clean QT as i have a permanent resident in there. i do perform water changes after transferring the fish to DT. few 50% water changes and while performing water changes i shake and scrub debris off the filters and ceramic media and then siphon it out.

That is impressive setup, no way I could do QT's in my garage in Houston. Its so humid here in the summer time.

I gotta read up on how dose because it seems the prazipro is pretty popular thing to do with new fish in a QT just reading around on the internet some.

What kind of autotop off do you use on a QT since there is no sump?

i do have a sump and a float sensor attached to RKE and or Apex (i dont remember i have both) which monitors water level and opens a solenoid which fills water to QT sump.
In your case with no sump there are 2 options.
1. you can manually top off everyday many times a day.
2. Buy a separate ATO (cheap ones on autotopoff.com)
or if you have a controller u can do the same i have. get a float valve and a small pump. hook it up to controller and let the controller monitor float valve inside the QT. when it runs low let it turn the pump (inside ro/di bin) turn on and fill till floats levels.

The many times a day part....I think ill just buy an ATO for both QT's. WIth an acrylic 20G I have and how the acrylic tanks have weird tops to them, guess ill have to find a specific kind of ATO.

you dont have to look for specific ATO. either drill a hole on eurobracing of the tank just big enough for the ATO pipe or place eggcrate on top of the tank and push the pipe through eggcrate. easy fix.

Bunmair,

I have 2 QTs -- one primiarly for fish, the other for inverts under "normal"" circumstances. Appreciate your thread and continual guidance to everyone here. I have a HOB mechanical filter and a skimmer available on each. When a situation arises I need to medicate with say, copper, what is your suggestion how and for how long to remove and then cleanse the biological (e.g. ceramic and/or foam) media before reintroducing it, and then putting it in my DT sump to gather beneficial bacteria before going back to the QT. I'd appreciate your view vs running by the seat of my pants, so I don't inadvertently reintroduce something unwanted to my DT or back into the QT one day...

Thanks for all your contributions here!

if i understand you correctly, you never take the media or anything (non living) from QT to DT. ceramic media tends to not absorb copper but still i would not move it to DT after doesnt with QT.
after treatment transfer fish to DT, scrub/siphon QT do few water changes. use carbon and cuprisorb if you like to take the copper out completely.

Got it. Thanks.

I'm starting the cycle, I used a crawfish instead of a shrimp as I had some raw frozen ones here. Im guessing it's okay to use a crawfish right?

So I'm currently filling a 31 gallon (30"x12"x20") QT tank with RO/DI water, I have a heater, powerhead, HOB AquaClear 50 filter with double biomax instead of carbon, bare bottom, just a few pvc pipe pieces going to go in for hide places. I plan to do the frozen shrimp in a panty hose to get cycling, do i need to add my salt mix off the bat and maintain proper salinity levels through the cycle or can i just add the salt before the first fish goes in? does my filtration sound up to par? i kinda wish i would have got the next size up but then again this tank will only house 2 small ocellaris at first, then after they are out one small to medium size fish at a time. Thanks all

If you QT a wrasse, is it okay to do that without sand?

Generally yes, just make sure to have PVC hiding spots.

If using copper don't have sand, but for other QT options you can use Tupperware dishes with sand in it for ease of taking out and replacing.
