Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

bnumair quesiton, is there any issue if I was to qt say a 2" hippo/3" naso & 3 small anthias in the 55 g tank? originally I was thinking of doing a yellow tang, but I think I'm going to cross that off my list.

Thanks for all your help!

No, they will be alright but tangs might show aggression, likely not. If they do divide the tank with egg crate.

I may have missed it after going through this monster thread, but would SeaChem Matrix biomedia be an acceptable substitute for ceramic media? Not sure if it is considered porous or not.

That is what I am using in the back of my AIO, so if it wont be affected by copper or meds, I will add a bag to my QT as well. Thanks!

I emailed Seachem, and they responded by saying:
"when using cupramine, your biological filtration will have little to no effect. The Matrix will no absorb the copper like live rock."

I guess this is another great alternative!

I will throw a bag in the qt since Im using a small hob with floss and carbon (that I would pull when dosing).

Hi
yes matrix is ok to use in hospital tank or QT.it is porous and works well in combination with seachen stability to cycle fast, it will no effect the use of cupramine. Hope this helps.

lol Seachem beat m to the answer. Yes anything ceramic or pure silica will not absorb copper thus making treatment very effective and also will be porous enough to harbor bacteria. Cupramine itself will kill about 20% of the bacteria but you can always substitute by using stability which will boost the bacteria and keep levels stable for most part.

and just to be clear, stability wont react with cup or prazi to cause toxicity issues?

nope, its perfectly safe to use in combination with cupramine and prazipro will hardly react with anything that i know off. so your good on it.

So I setup my QT tank, cycled it and added some Prazipro before adding the fish. Its been 2 weeks now and I did about a 50% water changed and added another dose of Prazipro. The salinity and temp were the exact same on the new water and QT water.

I currently have 2 naked clowns in the tank and they seem to have been doing great. Since this water change (first I noticed it anyways) one of the seems to be acting a little "off". Hardly eats and generally sits in the back near the wall of the tank and isn't active like he was.

During some picture taking a few days earlier, I noticed the one on the right has some whiteness in his coloring. Not sure if this is related, but his color doesn't seem to be as vibrant as it was, but maybe I am just being picky. Something is off though.

Any ideas???

have you noticed any aggression? fights chasing around?
i think that is the problem as i see the white marks and also see the top fin (middle of the body on top with black line) has a bite mark on it.

Actually no... even though I am not home all the time, but they seem to get along great. Once in a while I would see one make a little charge at the other, but more of a chase than anything.

Would this filter be appropriate for a 40 gallon breeder?
http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-Whisper...889&sr=8-1&keywords=aquarium+filter+40+gallon

Also, if you recall, I have an ich outbreak occurring in my 90 gallon DT and will be placing all of my fish (foxface, ocellaris clowns, flame angel, fairy wrasse, diamond goby, cleaner goby) into the 40 gallon breeder. I'm trying to avoid aggression and was also curious if you had any suggestions in creating hiding places for the fish? I keep debating back and forth on treating with prazipro (will the Angel be okay with it?) or going for hypo-salinity - which do you think is easier for a newb? My concern with hypo-salinity is being able to effectively keep the water at exactly 1.009 at all times for 6 weeks as I work throughout the week and will not be able to constantly check the salinity (once per day is likely fine).

I plan on beginning to set up the QT tomorrow and Friday, due to my limitations on being able to "watch" the tank, would it be best to put my DT's sump's filter sponge into the QT to help it cycle quickly? I'm concerned about an ammonia build-up with only being able to check the tank in the mornings.

That filter is a bit small, if you're just using that filter I would recommend using a powerhead also for water movement in the 40g.

To avoid aggression provide plenty of pvc pipes so they may hide.

Once per day as you adjust the salinity would be fine as long as you are using a refractometer.

It would be a good idea to use the sponge in the QT.

bnumair,

Question I have the following meds:

1. crypto-pro
2. paraguard
3. prazipro
4. copper

I know we talked about the tangs I'm buying that I know have ich. Plan is to do a week of prazipro then I am going to do the hypo as discussed.

I was wondering if it would be wise to dose paraguard while hypoing or use it at all?

The crypto pro I have on hand in case the hypo doesn't knock the ich out.

I could get the 60 gallon version instead or this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-26312-W...813&sr=8-4&keywords=aquarium+filter+40+gallon (or the step up from this one)

I was planning on either getting a small power head or air-stone regardless btw.

This aquaclear is also an option: http://www.amazon.com/AquaClear-50-...d=1396485127&sr=8-1&keywords=aquaclear+filter

If I go with the aquaclear, would I be able to just use the aquaclear foam inserts as opposed to poly-filter/floss?

keep any on them, i am still leaning towards pushing around. might happen for a while till they establish dominance. But we dont want things going too far where one gets hurt. again if things worsen do post a pic.

I would do the bigger one.

Make sure you do not use the inserts it comes with as you don't want carbon in your QT when you're medicating

Hi Spork
i wouldnt go with any of those, if your setting up a 40 gal tank as qt then i would go with atleast a 70-100gal HOB. aquaclear is what i use and they go make a 70. u need the most surface are to harbor bacteria and enough filtration to keep ammonia at bay. also u can use the sponge provided with it (will cause nitrates) or just replace that with ceramic media.
hope this helps
