Guthrie Water / RODI Help

So, I've decided to bite the bullet and finally buy a RODI unit. I've been doing some reading but can't quite figure out what I want to get. I'd assume from the smell of my water near Downtown guthrie, the water is pretty "dirty" and would "destroy" a filter quickly...

Anyone live in/near Guthrie or have any input on the mater?

What would be good options for a filter unit?

I've been scoping out the cheapest unit on AWI , but also see stuff on ebay like this.

I'm wanting as cheap as possible, without wasting me money in the long run having to replace filters more than needed. I currently am provided water to a 55 gal and a 10 gallon goldfish tank, and will be using around 30g a week or every other week. I figure buying this RODI will be cheaper than driving a 50ish min round trip to Aquariums 2-3 times a month.

here in broken arrow I have 2 prefilters a 5 micron and a carbon filter than I have the air water ice with DI

I cant answer on prefilters, but for your usage, the AWI mighty mite 50 gpd is perfect!

I have the awi extreme 150 and it's awesome! but I do have a 5 mic whole house prefilter and a water softener first. You mention it smells dirty? Sulfer? you may want to have you water tested, aquapure will do it for free, or almost you have to pay shipping on the bottles they send you. you can pull them up on line and just call them they will send you what you need to test and then just put it in the mail.

By dirty I don't mean sulfur, but when I first moved from the Tulsa area, the water smelled like fish. I"m mostly used to it now, but I'd assume something is slightly off with it. A friend mentioned getting a flyer from the city saying not to feed pets tap water at one point, but I don't know if that is true / still in affect.

I would splurge on whatever AWI unit you are looking at. You'll like it and not worry about killing pets. No need to worry in the relaxing arena of reef aquariums.

On a side note: If that flyer comment is true about not feeding pets tap water, which I'd think very doubtful, then even more reason to get an RODI. They are saying to not feed your animals the water?...What about us HUMANS?!? lol. AWI has supplies to spout off of the unit for easy human consumption too.

Yeah that was about my view on what my friend said...

And I don't put tap water in my tank anyways. Since I've started I've been warned against it, and have never used tap water. I used to live just down the street from Pet Stop in Owasso, and they sold salt water at $1 a gal so I just got water from them.

Here is a copy of Guthrie's water report from a couple years ago. They are required to test annually and submit this report for public record. The turbidity is way out of limits due to soil runoff. A carbon block will mediate any odor issues in the water. As far as exhausting the media or your prefilters expected life, you may have to replace prefilters and carbon blocks more frequently than normal perhaps. I honestly can't say for sure that's just something that will come from actually operating the equipment. I have the AWI xtreme typhoon III with a booster pump attached and am very happy with it. My water soure, however, is a private well, so it comes with alot of sandy sediment in the water column I will, however, say that I have a whole-house prefilter and softener before my RO/DI, so it gets better water than straight off the well.

So, totally got a unit today for a killer price I'm definately (next paycheck after rent) going to be joining and trying to hit up all the monthly meetings. Totally worth it for all the help I got today from one a club member
