Gyre 150 WoW!

i just received my brand new Maxspect Gyre 150 and had to comment on the performance. I'm running a 4 foot SPS dominated 90g and it's replaced my two Tunze streans, mp-10 and Tunze 6208 wavebox.

There are absolutely no deadspots and the amount of water it moves, is absolutely amazing. Highly recommended.

I'm a fan! Have just one in my 4 ft. 200 gallon. Will probably eventually add another opposite end and run as described above 40% forward 60% reverse. Great value in my opinion!

I was going to wait for the Jebao unit to get more comon in the market and then buy. But a friend in our local club has to move for a job and decided to sell out of his aquarium. Lucky me, I got a Maxspect Gyre 150 with a spare drive, spare cages and a spare controller all for $125.

I have a 180g sps & lps reef and the gyre at one end is great. I'm running it at 30% forward and 50% reverse. What a nice system. I just hope I don't have to clean it too often.

I run one in my 6' 240 FOWLR and not a dead spot, even with my rockwork in the way.
Replaced my closed loop with it and love it.

So crazy all the different things you hear on rc about these gyres. Half the people love them, the other half are saying the motor/ cords fall apart, need intense cleaning every 2 weeks, etc I was interested In a XF150 for my 120 tank. I am doing a reset and have no real power heads going in it now, no coral. Just a bunch of live rock and 4 fish. Recently upgraded sump and pump. Now looking to get good circulation. Hear a ton of people bashing the gyres and going back to tunze/ mp40's. Don't know what to invest into? A gyre or some mp40's?

the people that gripe about gyres being junk are stuck in the past.
like most things in life the first generation version wasn't nearly as good as the follow up models. lower quality cords and thinner blades got people upset but both have been resolved and i'd gladly put my gyre against whatever they're running.
as for cleaning, mine hasn't come out of my tank for 5 months and my flow is in no way suffering. i'll likely do it soon just to stay on top of proper maintenance.

Okay, thank you so much for the help, I'm definitely sold on it now, I was considering buying second hand for the cost benefit however wouldn't want to get stuck with a first generation, is there some sort of marker, or model/ serial number I could use to distinguish from the older models?

Is two Gryre 150's too much for a 40 breeder?
a single gyre 130 has enough jam to create flow so strong that it would throw your fish around easily. my single gyre 150 in my 120 gallon tank has to be tamed to 40% in forward and 60% in reverse.
in short, unless you have boatloads of money to burn just buy 1 and you'll see for yourself how impressive they really are.

i just looked and there isn't a packaging date on the box. if i were you i'd ask my lfs when they were ordered/stocked. at the very least i'm sure a simple google search will identify what the old style blades look like compared to the new thicker ones.

What is really cool, is you move the Gyre close to the surface and set return straight out, as you turn the unit up you will hit a spot that starts to suck in air and as it shoots across the surface it looks like a real wave just went through your tank. I would not leave it like that just because of all the bubbles bursting can get a little messy, but is neat to try and see all the different currents the unit creates. I run mine at 40% on 5 ft. and pulse about 8 to 10 sec. delay.:lolspin:

I am in the process of accumulating equipment to set up a 120 (4') and plan on a 150 Gyre. Interesting info as to the new model improvements. I hate to spend top dollar on a brand new one, but I think I will. I will be sure to get the latest updates. Thanks for the heads up!

the exact set-up i run. tons of flow.

I picked up a Gyre 150 for my 3' SPS tank. Needless to say, I no longer have my two MP40's I was running on the tank :P

The Gyre 150 is literally almost as wide as my tank. So it really covers everything quite perfectly! SPS are really taking a love to it, more so than the MP40's I had in here previously.

i forgot to add something... you should actually go with the 130 for your application. the 150 would be like putting a corvette engine in a prius.

Im running a 150 in my tank. Very similar dimensions to a 40 breeder! It's perfect.

The original gyres had a number of faults (that have been corrected), it's hard to shed a negative first impression. I currently run 2 130's in my 100g one side goes forward while the others in reverse and switches every several hours.

I have to strongly disagree. Not only can you run the 150 at a lower speed, it also covers the width of the tank better. I have 2x 150 in my 40 breeder SPS tank alternating on icecap modules via apex. They run at 45%.

I had 2 on a 6 ft 30" wide reef. covers amazing

I have them off right now since i just rebooted. i still have the 2 mp 40, AND 2 sea swirls. Im going to try it on a lower setting on pulse and see if it helps more. Otherwise, one will go on the frag system and ill sell the other.
