Gyre question

Since I'm in the process of acquiring all the equipment I need for my upcoming 125 build, I pulled the trigger on getting a Gyre for my flow needs. I found out once I got it, that due to its length and the fact my tank has dual corner overflows that take up a lot of space, that I can't mount it like I had planned to, i.e. horizontally near the top on the side of the tank.

I need opinions on whether I should keep it and mount it vertically so the flow goes around the outside of the tank, or since it's still unused, would you return it to BRS (not sure of their return policy) and go a different route for flow. If so, I'd need suggestions on what replacement to get, in the same $300 range although I could go a little higher if needed. Also, I plan on getting an Apex controller if that helps with suggestions.

That's too bad that it won't fit - I have one mounted horizontally and they do move a lot of water (I have mine dialed back to about 60 - 70%). In your situation I think I would return it (BRS has always been real good about returns in my experience).

Since the Gyre has come out, many people are switching out their other pumps for it. I also have a pair of Vortech MP40's that I really like - you may be able to pick them up used for a good price...

you could mount it vertically or you could also mount it on your back glass. you'd have to play around with the settings to get the best flow but i think you'd love it once you got it placed where you want it.

i've played with mine and tried it vertically but i found mounting it horizontally near the top on one end gives me the best flow.

My worry is if I mount it vertically I won't get the water movement on the surface I'm looking for. I guess I could point my returns slightly up for surface movement. I'm also concerned about mounting it in back since the tank is 6' long but only 18" front to back. Would I just end up with a massive cyclone in the center of the tank and dead zones on either side? My tank is a couple months from having water in it so I can't really test it. I've been sitting on this for three weeks already so I really need to go look into BRS's return policy to see how long I have to return it.

Anyone else have any thoughts on an alternative? I know before I got out of the hobby 8 years ago, everyone thought Tunze was the way to go. Is that still the case? If so what model would work best for me? Preferably in the same price range as the Gyre, but I could go higher if needed. I'm trying to use quality equipment this time around.

Thats a good question, pricing for eco-tech MP's increases substantially between models. While RW, and WP models don't increase in price much at all.

Example Price @ BRS for MP's
MP10 235$, MP40 395$ , MP60 675$

Example Price @ reef breeders.com
RW 4 79$, RW8 89$, RW15 99$, RW20 109$

It could be a very substantial drop in price.

Won't matter, even with the 35w version it's still too long. I'm in the same boat as OP. I still think I may get one and try it vertical. I have a Marineland/Perfecto 125RR w/ cornerflows, only have ~9" of space but the XF130 says its about 9.5".

Yep, that's the same tank I have. It seems the gyre is about a couple inches too long.

I would return it...In a tank of your dimensions I don't think verticle would work so well.

I saw it in person and can't say I was impressed. It just seems bulky to me, personally. I would personally try and find a couple used MP40s and go from there. I couldn't be happier with my MP10wES' in my 80gal. Just my 2¢.

Well from someone who has put it in action. The Gyre destroys MP40's... One gyre has single handedly replaced 2 MP40's and a Tunze wavebox, and is dramatically outperforming them.

I have tripled the amount two part dosing in the past few weeks from the generous increase in stony coral growth.

I would use 2 MP60's. Or the gyre and MP40 on back wall. MP40's are not really all that strong imo.
