Gyre... You're Killing Me!

I have the 150 on my 48x24x21 tank. It works well. It creates a lot of flow. The cleaning is really getting to me. I take it apart, dip it and then reassemble. One side doesn't work. Remove from tank, disassemble, realign etc. I probably spent 45 minutes last night putting this thing back together. I woke up this am and now it's not working. The end piece isn't stripped. I'm rather frustrated. Anyone else having issues with their Gyre?

I thought the Gyre was the end all, be all of water circulation, and all that R&D making a quality product justified the astronomical price tag?

You mean none of that is actually true and it's more than possible the same factories that make parts for every other power head, made the parts for the gyre?

Get outta town.

Love it. Basically the same thing I think every time I hear about problems with the gyre, which is often.

I do however hope you get this resolved. I have heard that their customer service is pretty good with these issues.

Why are you taking it apart for cleaning? In all the time I used my two, I never took them apart. I just gave them a vinegar soak now and then.

+1 I have only taken mine apart once to replace the blades but otherwise it stays intact for cleanings...

I am running 2 of the 150s on my 240 since January. I don't take them apart often but the first time I did I ran into the exact same issue as you did with one side not working. The issue turned out to be the cage bushing that slides onto the motor shaft. It didn't seem stripped but was enough that it did not work. Unfortunately they are not included in the box and need to be ordered from coralvue. Replacing it took care of the issue. Not saying this is your problem but is the first thing I would check.

They have way too many little plastic parts. They are cheep to replace bit need to be more robust for me to really get behind the product. Love the pump unless I need to take apart for any reason, then I curse the thing.

Well, it does move what subjectively (not really) seems like 2x the water of an MP40, but it does so in a thin flat sheet which is definitely a far superior and preferred water flow if you are circulating at the top of the tank or even across a tall long tanks front glass for example (mine does amazing things when I run it vertically and aim it down the front glass for the full length of the tank so it has some versatility).

Hopefully they will make maintanince easier with future versions. Until then (and until I get my moneys worth out of this one) It looks like I'm going to have to mark my calander to run the thing in vinegar with every change of GFO so that I don't have to take it apart often...which will make it my number one highest maintenance pump.

check to make sure none of the blades are broken. It won't work if they are. they are very easy to break cleaning it. It happened to me the first time I cleaned it. Its been in my garage for a month. Was actually going to put it back in the tank today - I do love the flow but man you have to treat it with care handling it.

The new rugged blades being released are awesome though. Super strong. I got a set at MACNA and you would have to seriously try to break them.

Mine does that. Have to really push it back together to make sure it is seated. Haven't had the issue for months but took out to clean today as the side was spinning but not fully. Found another issue that will be in a new thread in a sec.

I've been anti ecotech for a long time, yet finally bought my first mp10 few weeks ago.
The quiet drives are 90% quieter they say, pre-Teflon washer mod the quietdrive is loud as heck, I was not AT ALL impressed with the acoustics...
But that's a rant for another time :)

To the gyre point, yes, after having used every brand of pump out there, the gyre is the future. But they're not there yet.

Aside from not being able to program it in any way, if you run them at level 1 or 2, they can gunk up after a week and stop. level 3+ they're gravy.

The flow pattern vs flow amount vs wattage used is better than any other pump imo.
I will get them again, just after they have the programming side down.

.

I have 2 MP10 plus the Gyre 130 on my tank right now. And the reason I left both MP10 is for the thing you mention - my experience is it does gunk up quickly and you fine it stopped with red led on. What do you mean level 1 or level 2 .. is there a way to configure this thing to make it less likely to clog up so fast and stop working ?

to coralvue - please fix the 'too soon to gunk up and stop problem' as i love this gyre otherwise.

Thankfully the customer support is really good, however, I'm on my 5th controller 3rd motor block, second shaft assy and second power supply trying to get the blinking red light to stop haunting me. Still no solution, it works good for a week then it goes almost into a works for 10 min stops for one min cycle
