H. Mag ??!??!!?!

I've had an H. Mag in my 40 gallons for a couple of months now. When I bought it it didn't have many cnidoblasts in the tentacles so I placed half silver sides directly in the mouth. It usually ate that way. Now it has many more stinging cells in its tentacles and can eat without me helping it. I added a pair of Perculas yesterday hoping to make it happy and changed the current so the clowns could live in it without being blown away. But last night the mag started doing things it never has, like changing it's shape and I noticed a transparent spot. Is this something to be worried about? Here are some pics I took late last night.

Here it is this morning and what it usually kinda looks like, not stretched out like last night

It's kinda blurry, but I'm point to the small transparent spot I noticed yesterday

haha, thanks, I love it

im going to go out o a limb to put your mind at ease

the spot doesnt look scary to me.

im sure someone with mag experience can help more besides that spot it loooks really good.

is that whitish band/section in the middle normal too? that may be cause by him stretching out, but I just want to make sure

I would move those xenia stalks away from the nem. They are probably stinging the animal.

What are cnidowhatever?!! Nematocyst?

I would also adjust the current to its' previous state. Percs will manage to cope. Anemone might not.

Xenia doesn't sting, it releases chemicles when under attack or stress. However, the pictures indicate healthy Xenia but I still agree with MarinaP. I would get rid of those Xenia colonies. I am not to familiar with H. Magnificas, but in general, when the foot or oral disk of the anemone starts to turn white that usually means that the anemone is not getting enough food/nutrition...aka bleaching. I am not 100% positive but I wouldn't doubt myself. We will see what others have to say.

cnidoblasts? hahaha, those are the stinging cells that cnidarians harpoon into their prey to stun them. Just a little term I picked up from my research. :bum:

Well I will certainly TRY to move the xenias, I guess maybe cutting the base would work, they are pretty hardy in terms of being torn and all. And I've been feeding the mag silversides, but maybe tomorrow I will pick up some oyster meat or something and soak it in some kind of nutrient enricher. Thank you so far for the advice

Don't. Major risk of contamination. Feed Mysis or silversides.

Where is THIS research coming from?

Yeah soak the food for maybe 20 min to an hour in an enrichment formula. You can probably pick some up at your LFS. Unfortunately I don't know much about mags yet, but maybe Austin will chime in, he knows a lot about mags.

Sorry about your perc.
I would move the xenia, Anything that may bother the anemone i would move. They are not a easy to take care of species of anemone and i wouldnt risk having anything that could possibly annoy it near it.
I have always soaked food in selco, or selcon, w/e you want to call it. For about an hour if i didnt pre-do it.
Normally, what i would do was mix up my big frozen bag of silversides in a container with a full bottle of it. Let it sit in the fridge overnight. Then refreeze it. Saving me time in the end because then all i have to do is defrost.
Besides being a 40 breeder, give the rest of the stats on your system...
skimmer
lights
what pumps
etc.
Your going to want a mixed flow around the anemone. Nothing pointing directly at it, bouncing off the walls has always been best for me, or pointing two powerheads at each other giving random flow if i don't have a wave maker.
All that said, i would look into a wave maker, something rotating, and high lows, if you can. Any kind is better than none ime.
In my 29 that i keep my mag in i have roughly 1,200 gph if all flow was is at once. But, i would say half that at any given time would be on with the wavemaker going.
At this point, to tell you anymore, were going to need system stats....

On the topic of your dead perc, did you quarintine? if so how long and doing what?
fwiw

I've been soaking my silversides in zoecon for about an hour now and am about to feed them.
For lights.. I can't remember the wattage exaclty, but a 10k bulb ann t5s. I don't have any fancy closed system circulation, but I have some maxijets blowing water on the sides.I have one angeled to the side and above the anemone which creates most of the current. and a weaker one pointed the opposite direction right over the anemone, that usually creates some random bursts of current right into the anemones tentacles. I rely mostly on my refugium for filtration, what it doesn't get i have a remora pro running.

do you recomend any specific wavemaker for a mag?

For the perc, no I don't usually quarantine my fish, mostly b/c I rarely ever buy new fish. I don't have many fish in the tank in the first place, just some bully damsels, a hawk, and a tang. Normally my LFS never sells me a bad fish and it looked healthy, but it happens.

so I'm standing there at my aquarium ready to move those xenia, when it hits me that I have no clue how to effectively do so. Thhe rock was $90 because of its shape and size plus the colonies of xenia on it, and the mag happened to live on it so I bought both at the same time. I'm a bit hesitant to start destroying thisrather expensive xenia rock. If any one has any advice I would sure like to know

here's a pick I took after I just fed one of the silversides. It seems to be a bit lower than usual today
