This is my external 200 1260 dialed in as best I can -

Finsreef - can you recommend an air flow gauge so I can get it dialed in even better?

Also - this (I point to the part where they recommend dialing the air down...) was taken from deltec's site which I find may be sort of useful or up for discussion - I would like to hear any comment:

The AP701 is Deltec's answer to reefkeepers' requests for an AP851 that could fit inside a standard cabinet. The AP701 produces a maximum level of air at 950L/H, but will be more efficient in most aquariums turned down to 600-650L/H using the venturi valve. This is due to turbulance in the neck of the skimmer drawing foam back into the body. On a low nutrient SPS tank however it should be possible to use all of the air as the level of foam will typically be less. Drain is standard. Capacity: Normal Stocking: 440g
Heavy Stocking: 320g
Pump: Eheim 1260
Total Power Usage: 52 watts

My A110-F2000. This thing is built like a truck. My ASM was a peice of junk compared to this one (but it worked well), hopefully it will perform better too.

Do I have it dialed in right for dry foam? this is about 20 hours in.

ok - this sort of troubles me. Brian showed us his dialed in 200 1260 and mine bubble level/size (next pic or so) looks almost identical. But look at scarletknight06's 110-2000 - the pic right above my post - his bubbles are big a lot lower yet he is getting good product at the top and over the edge whereas my fine bubbles are 1.5 inch below the top part where skimate fall over

Why do I dwell on this? Because I don't like my fine thick bubbles so close to the top because as I feared - finally the other night it boiled over because I must of dialed it in after feeding or something such that after I went to sleep the bubble column crawled up and overflowed.

If my big bubbles (bottom of) were at the same level as scarlett.'s the line of top bubbles would not reach the cup top.

So, I mean SO!!, where should my fine level of bubbles be??

OR - does this has everything to do with nature of load in the tank (which my load is not very heavy)

My load isnt heavy either. How long have you let it sit without adjusting it, thats about 4 hours after making a final adjustment, maybe you're just playing with it too much. Or maybe try slowing down the flow through skimmer.
 
Its been running for months and that picture is indicative of its usual profile - that is, the fine line of bubbles is so much higher than yours (otherwise the top bubbles never reach the top) and I wish it was lower and sending up the large ones like yours. As far as the flow - yes, I guess that is my next try - except first I would really like Brians input

How much flow do you have running thru yours and while I like and agree for the reaon for you not realting your tanks info LOL - what size is your tank??

I have everything in a 50g rubbermaid stock tank right now because my landlord said my tank is too big. But this will be on my 40g breeder I am setting up.

an eheim 1000 is feeding the skimmer, it pumps 260gph and I have it turned down halfway so my guess is about 130gph. brian suggested my flow through be around 100-120 gph.

It looks like you are getting some good dark and dry skimmate so maybe thats justs the way yours is. Also try raising your salinity to 1.025-6 if its lower than that.
 
hmmm, you may be right on - I am using an ehiem 1250 and figure I am getting more than 250 with the way I have it dialed in and I bet my salt is lower as well.

these skimmers require a relatively low flow rate so maybe that is your problem (hope so at least). you should read the thread entitled "protein skimmer improvements" in anthony calfo's forum. he talks about a lot of great stuff there. skimmers do foam better when closer to salinity of natural sea water 1.027, i believe.

The airflow gauge I use is the Dwyer RMA-22. It will read up to 20lpm. As far as the instructions for the Deltec unit, I could not comment on them, but for the H&S Skimmers they run best at Maximum airflow. Maximum airflow is not achieved with the pinch valve wide open.
By turning the valve down some, it actually increases the airflow into the pump. I will post pictures shortly.
I run the salinity of my tank at 1.025 per Sybon Refractometer.
On comparing bubble height you need to take into consideration the tank and stocking density of 'your' tank and conditions.
The picture I posted earlier is on a system of 3- 40g breeder tanks that are run barebottom with no fish, only corals. There is no food or fish waste being produced, therefore I have to run the bubble level higher to produce a wet-foam. The tanks are almost sterile. If you have a high fishload, or feed heavily then you can dial you skimmer down and produce a darker skimmate. I cannot give you the exact position to run your bubble level, because it depends on your tank.

I would adjust the flow rate into your skimmer to 1x your total system volume and see if the longer contact time will help. If you do not see any improvement, then more to the higher end of flow at 300-325gph and see how that does. I would not exceed the 325gph input.
These skimmers are powerful, and care has to be taken when feeding or adding chemicals. Never adjust your skimmer after feeding unless it is to lower the water-level in the skimmer due to binders or other additives in food. What did you feed on the night it overflowed?

Wow... pinching the air line down almost doubles the air intake on those eheim pumps. Won't be long before a skimmer manufacturer in southern cali will be asking themselves, "hey, what if we tried that too?" Gotta love the R&D department over there. :D

Please keep one of those air flow meters set aside for me.

just thought I would add my little bit to this for someone who is lazy like me and just drains the cup and cleans it on water changes. Nothing groundbreaking as I am sure many people do this. It was about a 15 minute job and having the ABS material makes it much easier to drill. Once Acrylic gets wet it can break fairly easy. Anyways, there you go.

Hey Brian - where did you get the Dwyer air flow meters from?

I just got my new (used) skimmer in the mail today from Fliger! He packed it to withstand anything FedEx could throw at it.

This thing is a beast. I can't wait to hook it up.

It's going on a 500g system. How much flow do you recommend? I intend to run it gravity fed from one of my overflows IF I can. It may be a little tight since this thing is so big.

Also, what do you mean by "pinching" the air line? Just get some kind of clip or is there some kind of builtin adjustment that I am just blind to at the moment?

The build quality rocks. Definately blows away every other skimmer I've seen..including Deltec. :)

Actually Ted, I already tried it. On the "Socal" skimmers you speak of, this has the opposite affect according to my Dwyer airflow meter.

found it now I got the model number Dwyer RMA-22. :)
I made the mistake to buy one on ebay and it is a monster way to big.
