If you don't go and get the actual Deltec/H&S needlewheel pump, then your results are kind of bunk. You won't really be able to answer if the Eheim's with the pinwheel type needlewheels actually perform better than say an OR 3700 with its needlewheel.
You won't be able to say, well, the OR 3700 actually performs the same as an H&S eheim 1260 because you won't actually have the exact pump they use.
If you were really trying to do a test, then that would have to be the route you take, but I can understand the money issue.
Although, I will actually probably be purchasing the H&S eheim 1260 pump and the OR 3700 and then having both installed on a 32" tall skimmer that has an 8" diameter with air meters for both to see which pump draws more air and to see which will perform better over a one month period.

Yeah that's actually the direction I was thinking about going but I would purchase a spare impeller to do the needlewheel mod to. Basically what I was thinking is that using the pics I've got of the Eheim needlewheel and how it fits in the pump housing, I could have one made that it nearly identical and then switch them out, measuring the performance of each for a comparisson. While I do think that there has been a decent amount of development and design that has gone into the eheim needlewheel, I tihnk that we are overcomplicating it. It's a basic concept that I think shouldn'ty be hard to duplicate. The thing that I'm a little worried about is the comment made earlier aboutthe inside of the housing beong different on the skimmer model than the basic Eheim with standard impeller....Guess we'll see.
So here is my question on the H&S skimmer; because I have a small tank (45 gallon) and little to no room in my sump, I am looking at the A110-F2000 (up to 100 gallon) external model. It list the height as 22.5", how much extra do you need for maintainence and removing the waste cup. In the compartment next to my sump I have about 25" of "head room". Would this skimmer work for me, heighth wise?
I'm just starting my tank and looking to put a skimmer in in the next week or two. I would love to spend $100-$150 on the skimmer but I am not willing to risk the health and happiness of the critters I will be keeping to save a dollar. So, I am willing to spend what I have to to get something that works and will last. That said, can you let me know if this skimmer will work for me or do you know of a good "hang on" or "low profile" skimmer that will work for my limited space?

i think hightwise it would work, the skimmers need very little room to remove the cup. 30 to 40 mm( think this is about 1,5" are enough)
my 200/1260 is 550 mm and my room under the tank 595 mm.

craiga-the a110 will be great for you. I have that skimmer on my 40 breeder sps, its great. 2.5" should be enough to clear the cup.

I was cleaning my A300 today and noticed that the SS washers had rust on them I summed it upto iron ions in the water cleaned them up they look good,I then noticed wear on some washers as if the impellar shifted and created a deformed circle.also the impellar base seems to be worn a little no longer perfectly straight like the other 2.
Do you where I can get these washers?

Guys got a question for ya about the a110-f2000.
Is the exaust output perpendicular to the "long side" of the skimmer? In the pic on finsreef seems to look that way. Though I think pics I've seen in this thread look different.
I only ask cause Im space limitted in my cabinet and would prefer the exhaust to dump directly into my sump without having to use a 90 deg elbow. That is I'd like the long side of the base to be parallel to my sump

Just as a side note, I've narrowed my choices down to the a110 or the Deltec AP600... It seems to me they are quite comparible. Are their any major differences between these skimmers?

ill take a picture tonight of my a110 and post. i think the difference is the deltec has a 6" diameter body and the h&s is 5"

OK another question, has anyone modded a110 collection cup to add a drain?
It's not an issue of not wanting to clean out the cup frequently, as I'm pretty good with that.
Rather, I travel for business sometimes for a few days at a time and I wouldn't want the cup to overflow... or for that matter if something goes haywire, I'd like to have the comfort of knowing I can drain an over filled collection cup back into my sump. instead of having my auto topoff create a huge mess both in and out of the tank
What I'm thinking of is a hole drilled in the bottom on the cup. A tube inserted thru it (maybe using some kind of small bulkhead) that would rise a few inches inside the cup. So that when the skimate got too high would cause some of it to drain.
Any ideas? has anyone done anything similar to this?

Question for you people. I tuned up my 200 X 2-f2001 skimmer and it is running incredibly. The only problem I have is that after producing about 2-3 cups of mobil 1 motor oil, I stop getting production because the sludge is so thick in the neck nothing can get past it. Any solutions other than cleaning every few days?
